Where to Delegate your 2018 Marketing Budget

Instead of setting typical goals this year, in this eTip I’m talking about what to do with your marketing budget now that the New Year is upon us.

How are you planning to attain your business goals in 2018? Watch this quick video for 4 ideas and strategies on where to delegate your marketing funds this year.

4 Business Marketing Budget Suggestions

  1. Planning Your 2018 Marketing Budget

First things first: do you have a marketing budget? If not then set one. Set a budget that you think will afford you enough money to grow your business.

  2. Improve Yourself

Marketing budgets don’t have a strict size so allocate what you see as enough to help you grow. This doesn’t refer to learning how to do someone else’s expertise, but is updating your professional growth and expanding your knowledge base so you grow as your business does.

In terms of my own business we deal in branding, online marketing, web development, and more and our industry is always changing so we need to adapt by learning new skills all of the time as well as upgrading the current skills we have.

By improving on your expertise you are improving your business and it’s potential to grow. The more you are an expert in your field, the more you will shine above your competitors.

  3. Attend Events

Another thing to consider is attending live events that pertain to your business.

These are great for not only learning from the speakers but they’re also great for meeting new people who work in your industry.

You’ll meet great people, hand out cards, and make new connections all while learning from experts in your field.

You don’t have to travel for these either. You can look for relevant speaking events in your area or at least some that are within a reasonable driving distance.

Try to attend at least one! I always have a great time at these and meet lot’s of interesting people who help me grow.

  4. Business Marketing

Lastly we have the marketing itself. There is your SEO, your social media, the social media ads, the Adwords, Bing ads, and content marketing.

It’s a huge topic that many entrepreneurs get stuck on because they think they can learn to do it all themselves. It’s quite unrealistic.

All the time you spend trying to learn someone else’s expertise will waste your time while you try to learn very complex systems that take years to master and that time is much better spent focusing on what you do as a business.

And most people don’t even finish the courses! If you’re considering an online course to learn something quickly remember that only 10% of people who start an online course actually finish it and even those that do often come away with nothing of value.

Hire an expert but make sure they’re an actual expert. Outsource to a reputable source like an established online marketing company. Vet them thoroughly or even try hiring a consultant and building your team right. Remember to listen and at times trust their experience and expertise.

When you have someone who is a good fit they’ll likely need some coaching on your branding and messaging but once that’s adhered to and settled then let them shine in their respective role.

If you’ve hired an expert in overall organic marketing you’ll need to allow time for the results. Adwords is much more immediate but seeing the results from efforts that need to be interpreted by Google or need to build your social presence will take time.

Hopefully this helps you determine whether learning everything about online marketing is worth it or if it’s worth finding a solid expert to work with who can help you build your business professionally.

That is what I suggest you all do in order to build your business in 2018.

A quick recap:

  • Build yourself through learning new skills
  • Build your business by attening speaking events
  • Do your marketing and hire an expert if you see that your time will be stretched too thin to try learning everything about a constantly changing and growing industry.

What To Do With Old Content To Keep Building Brand Exposure

I’ve been producing a lot of content over the years: articles for our blog as well as these videos. I also used to post a lot of eTips that would be put on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn as well as quotes and inspirational messages.

I realized I need to commit to doing something more with all of that older content. There’s a whole library of assets that I should and will continue to use in my content marketing efforts.

So today’s tip is to not forget about the old content that you have.

Go back into your blog and take some of the older articles that were really effective and had good responses to and repost those to your social media channels.

Put them into new social media channels that you didn’t post into before like Medium or LinkedIn Pulse and Instagram.

That’s what I’ve committed to. I’ve got hundreds of pieces of content that I can be repurposing and reusing by showing them again to my audience. No one is going to remember every little thing that I’ve posted and the same applies for you.

A video or a blog article that I posted a year or two ago is not going to be remembered. In reality, we are doing our followers a favour by reposting them.

So part of my content marketing strategy is to start reusing some of that old content that I’ve got and repurpose it too.

A great content marketing strategy includes repurposing and reposting old blog contentClick To Tweet

For instance, I could take a blog article and create a video or an audio for iTunes as a podcast. There are lots of things that we can be doing with the content that we’ve already created.

That’s my challenge to you is to think about how much content you have from the past that you can repurpose, send it out again and also send out as new content to your new followers who didn’t know you back then.

If you have any questions or comments please leave them in comments section below.

5 Social Media Mistakes That Are Killing Your Business Results

5 Social Media Mistakes That Are Killing Your Business Results

The online marketing world is evolving at a rapid pace since the emergence of social media.

Nowadays, many prospective clients will judge you based on your social media presence so it’s imperative to keep a professional profile and maintain your social media presence consistently, in order to give the best impression of your business image.

Entrepreneurs Beware: Your prospective clients will judge you based on your social media presence.Click To Tweet

After reading this article, you will have a better sense of social media, lessen the confusion you have around it and learn some tips on how to gain better engagement with your efforts.

Here are the 5 mistakes I commonly see entrepreneurs and small business owners make on social media:

  1. MISTAKE #1 – Not Having a Marketing Strategy in Place

I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage before, “if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know you’ve arrived?”

The same thing applies in any business marketing efforts – you must have a strategy in place so you can see if your efforts are not only working, but be able to determine WHAT you should be doing in order to meet your business goals.

The first thing you need is to implement a marketing strategy. This strategy should include social media but not be exclusive to it. Social media should only be one spoke in your overall marketing strategy.

Your ultimate goal is to maintain a consistent social media presence. Whether you do that 100% yourself or you hire people like eVision Media to help supplement your efforts, this is a critical component to your success.

  2. MISTAKE #2 – Not Having Consistent Branding

Another mistake I see is entrepreneurs not fully understanding the importance of a visual brand and keeping it consistent across EVERY marketing channel, including social media.

This means having your logo on everything plus use consistent brand colours, fonts and style in order to present the same brand message across everything you do.

Often I see disharmony between a Facebook page cover image and a website where there is little indication the two are related.

Brand recognition is very important and shouldn’t be ignored.

This also applies to inconsistent messages. Be sure to keep a clear understanding of your values and business position so you don’t post things that are contradictory to that or give an incorrect impression about you.

  3. MISTAKE #3 –  Not Fully Defining Your Ideal Client Profile

In order to know what to post on social media, you must know who your target market is. This is imperative that you fully understand who it is that you want to appeal to in your social media efforts.

There’s no point in going through all the work of posting if you don’t know who it is that will be the most willing and able to do business with you.

You end up sharing posts your followers are not interested in and they will be quick to unfollow as a result.

RELEVANCY is key. Once you are clear on who you want to attract as your ideal client, then you want to focus on sending “that person” the kind of posts that appeal to them or provide information they are seeking.

  4. MISTAKE #4 – Trying to “Push” Too Much

SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A FORM OF ADVERTISING

And don’t be fooled into thinking it is. If you do, then you will most certainly fail and not get near the results you are hoping for.

It’s important to realize that social media is not a means for you to continually “Push” yourself upon your followers by trying to sell them or get them to sign up for something.

There has to be an exchange of value happening or you WILL lose followers.

I see a lot of new entrepreneurs not balance their promotional posts with informational posts and it’s important to understand to GIVE VALUE FIRST and build up relationships with your followers and then the natural tendency will be for them to want to know more about you and what you have to offer.

I believe one of the main reasons why some people do this is that they are not seeing social media as a long-term strategy.

It’s a long term commitment where you shouldn’t expect immediate results, but in the long run, you will  reap the benefits of your efforts.

  5. MISTAKE #5 – Not Posting the Right Message at the Right Time the Right Way

This is where a lot of valuable time and energy is wasted.  For example, say someone is wide awake at 1am and decides this is the perfect time to get caught up on their social media.

You’ll see posts about how they can’t get to sleep or how their cats look so cute curled up together on the bed.

Meanwhile, their target market is fast asleep, not paying any attention and more importantly, don’t care even if they did see the post!

What is happening is many people are being too random on social media and not strategic enough where they haven’t figured out WHAT their followers want to read from them or what time of the day and week they would most likely be online to read those posts.

So be sure to look at your social media stats regularly to find this information out and use your target market analysis to help you determine what to write about.

I witness several more mistakes but these are top of mind. Are you guilty of any?

If yes, that’s why I formed an online group membership program called Social Blast, specifically to help entrepreneurs and small business owners get clarity on what to do, when to do it and how to do it.

We meet online once a month where I share step-by-step tips and strategies to save you time and help skyrocket your results with social media marketing for your business.

The Reality Of Ignoring Website SEO

“If you build it, they will come”
Only works in the Field Of Dreams

The Reality Of Ignoring Website SEO

It’s a very exciting time getting your website finally completed and launched. Now you can sit back, relax and wait for the phone to ring, right?

Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way.

Now you need to be focusing on driving qualified leads to your website; otherwise, no one will actually know it exists.

There are several ways to doing this ranging from utilizing Social Media to other online marketing efforts but let’s focus on SEO: Search Engine Optimization.

After reading this article, you will understand the reality of ignoring SEO, why it’s important to incorporate it into your online marketing efforts, and what you need to know before hiring someone to help you.

The reality of SEO

SEO is a strategy that gets your website listing higher up in the search engine results when someone is typing in a search query that matches what you do or offer.

Your goal is to show up on the first 3 pages of those results… anything past that and your website will likely be lost in a sea of competitors.

One of the reasons why SEO is so effective is that even though most consumers are really tired of being inundated with marketing everywhere they look, they are actually quite receptive to the kind of “just-in-time” marketing that is represented by a high placement in search engine results from places like Google, Bing or Yahoo!.

So the reality is, if you own a business website, you must implement website-based search engine optimization. Ignoring this important strategy will result in getting fewer qualified leads due to potential customers never knowing you exist.

Fitting SEO Into Your Marketing Budget

According to a post by Dominate With SEO – as a business owner/entrepreneur, you have to decide what role the Internet will play in your business marketing budget and whether you’ll be implementing a strategic search engine marketing campaign or focus on other business-building methods.

Search engine optimization, and eMarketing in general, can serve a number of different purposes:

  • It can generate sales and leads both online and offline.
  • It can convince search engine users to implement the actions you desire such as:
    • buying your product or service,
    • signing up for your newsletter,
    • downloading a free “give-away” document,
    • registering for a seminar,
    • and so on

A bonus, yet often overlooked positive effect SEO has on your business is with your website/company’s prominent position on the search engine results actually contributes to higher:

  • Industry Exposure,
  • Rankings,
  • Target Market Attraction, and
  • Brand/ Name Recognition

When done correctly, search engine optimization can bring qualified potential buyers to your website that are actually looking for what you are offering. You know they’re looking for it because they typed in a keyword or phrase that is directly related to your content.

Since all of these purposes are essentially what you would want to achieve when doing online marketing, it makes sense that SEO be a strategic part of your overall marketing plan.

What a Professional SEO Company Does to Get You the Best Results

When researching SEO companies, it’s important to understand what they will do for you and if those efforts are relevant to your goals.

Here is what a typical professional SEO company could do for you, depending on their package and service offerings:

  • Research your online competition.
  • Research and implement targeted keywords and phrases.
  • Manually submit your site to search engines and relevant directories (not use automated tools that will spam directories and get you little results).
  • Rewrite and revise your website content to make it the best it can be while utilizing your pertinent keywords and phrases.
  • Create relevant inbound links and relevant linking partners.
  • Make sure you don’t have any items on your site that may “blacklist” it from the search engines.
  • Use Meta tags properly and that are page specific if warranted.
  • Create and implement accounts in the major search engine webmaster tools and monitor the websites health frequently.
  • Make sure your site is properly built using compliant coding for optimal performance.
  • Keep on top of your site rankings and freshen your content to raise your ratings even more.
  • Think outside of the box in using many creative yet ethical ways to increase qualified traffic.
  • Keep up-to-date with all the latest on-line marketing trends including blogging, social media and article submissions.

The 3 R’s of Search Engine Optimization

When researching which professional SEO company to work with, think in terms of the 3 R’s to SEO.

  1. Research: What are your goals that you want to achieve with SEO? Fully understand what exactly SEO is and if it will accomplish those goals for you. Research the advice you get and don’t let yourself be sold a bill of goods that might be unnecessary to achieve the results you wish.

You don’t always get what you pay for in this industry so educate yourself, become informed and ask questions.
  2. Relevance: Are your web pages relevant to the search term you’re trying to rank higher? Is it relevant to optimization or even needing SEO?

Without a balanced approach to your needs, any SEO program could fail. Find the balance of your budget and the relevance of your needs and demand honesty of implementation from a reputable SEO company.
  3. References:Ask for references with any company you are considering hiring to do your SEO. Ask for clients who have gone through their program and talk to them.

Any company worth their weight in salt will have no problem supplying references of clients or encourage you to contact the clients yourself if a portfolio is provided. Shop around and check out what you need and what is worth paying for,

Without proper search engine optimization, your website and business can suffer or not reach its fullest potential. The bottom line is it’s a small price to pay for a sustainable business model.

In fact, it is truly in your best interest to work with a qualified SEO company that is not only well versed in search engine optimization but also in online marketing and web development; the three industries are so intertwined that any business can really benefit from having this well rounded approach to your overall marketing program.

If you have been ignoring SEO for your website, now is the time to get into action and get your business found in Google! Give us a call for more details on how we can help you achieve your business goals.
