The Missing Piece Between Surviving and Thriving in Business
We often admire resilience as the ultimate quality for success.
Get knocked down, get back up. Keep pushing forward. Never quit.
And while resilience matters, resilience on its own doesn’t guarantee growth in business.
I’ve been reflecting a lot on this lately. My Dad recently passed away, and I shared these thoughts at his Celebration of Life. He was on my mind because he lived what felt like nine lives.
There was the tractor accident where I (quite literally) ran him over (I wrote an article on this last year, and you can read it here).
Then there were the cancers. Throat. Prostate. Lung. And more recently kidney and bladder. Each time, he fought back. Each time, he somehow got up again.
That was until this last year.
A tumour in his neck marked the end of his fight. Even then, he never gave up. He carried that same determination right to the very end.
His resilience defined him.
But when it comes to business, simply “getting back up” isn’t always enough.
If all we do is keep pushing without making adjustments, we risk burning out, running out of money, or losing the very drive that got us started in the first place.
You see, resilience needs direction.
You need to be clear on whom you serve.
You need to be clear on the value you deliver.
You need to be clear on how you stand apart from competitors.
Without that foundation, resilience can keep you spinning your wheels. With it, resilience becomes powerful. It fuels consistent growth because every ounce of effort is focused in the right direction.
This is why so many entrepreneurs and small business owners feel exhausted.
They’re putting in the hours. They’re being resilient. But without clarity on their brand positioning, they’re being resilient in the wrong direction.
My Dad’s legacy reminds me daily: Yes, keep getting back up, but make sure you know what you’re standing up for.
Don’t just survive. Set yourself up to thrive.
That’s why I created The ‘No More Wasted Marketing’ Workbook. It’s easy to follow, with step-by-step guidance, real-world examples, and even AI prompts you can use to move through the process with confidence. Think of it as a roadmap that takes the guesswork out of marketing so your resilience is always working in the right direction.
If you’re ready to focus your energy where it really matters, this is a simple place to start.
Until next time, I’m Susan Friesen, your small business brand positioning strategist, inviting you to stay clear, stay focused, and stand out.
