The AI Trap in Your Brand Messaging

The AI Trap in Your Brand Messaging

When One Subtle Misstep Changes Everything

Have you ever watched the Olympic ice dancing partners and caught yourself holding your breath?

Aside from the incredible lifts and synchronized twizzles, it’s the knowledge that at any moment, a single hesitation could change everything for them… along with their hopes and dreams of winning a medal.

This week in Milano Cortina, Lilah Fear stumbled in the twizzle sequence of their free dance, and just like that, Great Britain’s medal hopes were gone. They had dreamed of becoming the next skating medallists since Torvill and Dean’s incredible winning performance in 1994.

It only took that one moment of losing control.

At that level, that’s all it takes to change everything.

And I can’t stop thinking about what it teaches us about trust.

The kind of trust that literally determines whether you continue to compete as a pair or not. Because at the Olympic level, trust isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s everything. It’s the foundation beneath their entire routine.

I’m not just talking about avoiding a fall — that’s bound to happen. I’m talking about believing your partner will be exactly where they need to be, every single time, even under Olympic-level pressure.

And when a mistake happens, it reaches far beyond the score. It can affect the tight bond between partners.

Sometimes that kind of mistake becomes a turning point and they come back stronger. But sometimes doubt starts to creep in, which can be very dangerous in a two-person routine.

And if that doubt can’t be repaired, they don’t just lose a medal.

They lose the partnership they’ve spent years building.

Your Brand Is a Partnership Too

When we put this into the context of business, there’s a powerful parallel.

Your brand is a partnership.

It’s a partnership between you and your audience.

With everything you say, write, do, and share, your brand is making a promise. And your audience is quietly deciding whether you are safe to trust.

What’s insidious about this is that you don’t always know it’s happening. It’s not as though people send complaint emails explaining their internal trust meter. For the most part, it all happens behind the screen without you knowing it.

But over time, if something feels off, they become more wary. And eventually, they may simply move on and find a new “partner” to trust.

Right now, I’m seeing trust get damaged in one specific way that many business owners don’t even notice.

And that is through AI-driven brand messaging.

I’m not referring to using AI. I use AI, and so does my team. That’s not the issue.

The issue arises when AI starts replacing your authority and your human presence in your marketing. It happens when your messaging begins to sound like everyone else’s messaging — written by the same tool, using the same phrases, the same cadence, the same polished tone.

There are tell-tale signs. I didn’t recognize them at first either. But over time, the patterns, the rhythm, and even certain grammar cues started to stand out.

And don’t assume your audience doesn’t notice them too.

Authority Cannot Be Automated

Before you say, “Oh, I always review what AI writes before I publish it,” let me ask you something.

Are you truly reviewing it for voice and authority — or are you simply scanning for accuracy and feeling relieved at how much time you saved?

I understand how tempting that relief can be. You’re busy. You’re wearing multiple hats. Any tool that eases the overwhelm feels like a gift.

But your audience doesn’t see what’s happening behind the scenes. They don’t know how hard you’re working to help them. All they see is what’s in front of them.

And in every moment, they are assessing your credibility through a multitude of subtle signals.

They aren’t running data analysis in their heads. They’re responding instinctively.

They’re wondering:

Do you sound like someone who knows what they’re talking about?
Do you come across as someone who has earned their expertise?
Or does something feel inauthentic?

This is where overusing AI begins to cost you — even if the content looks perfectly “fine.”

It may be grammatically flawless. Structurally solid.

But if it doesn’t sound like you, if it uses common AI-centric phrasing that could belong to anyone, you risk quietly losing credibility.

You’ve probably done it yourself. You read a post and instantly think, “AI wrote this,” and your trust shifts just slightly. You scroll past. You disengage.

If you’re doing that to others, it’s safe to assume others may be doing it to you.

And that is the brand equivalent of losing trust on the ice.

It’s not a dramatic crash. It’s a subtle misstep that costs you the medal.

So yes, use the tools available to you. Let AI assist you. But remember it is an assistant — not a replacement for you.

Not the one speaking as you.
Not the one replacing your earned expertise.

Because when it does, you send a signal you never intended to send.

A signal that you’re not fully present.
Not fully leading.
Not fully the authority.

And in a world where people are already tired, skeptical, and overloaded, trust is fragile.

They are looking for what feels real. For a person they can trust. A real expert. A real guide. Someone who has been in the trenches and can say, “Here’s what I’ve learned. Here’s what works. Here’s what doesn’t. Here’s what you should do next.”

AI can help you structure those thoughts. It can help you brainstorm angles.

But it cannot replace your human authority — the perspective shaped by real work with real clients.

So the question becomes this:

Are you leading your brand with trust in mind?

Take a moment to audit your messaging. Read your recent posts and emails out loud. Listen carefully.

Does it sound like you?
Does it sound like someone who does real work?
Does it sound trustworthy?
Or does it sound like a generic “content voice” that could belong to anyone?

If you’re hearing that AI tone, that perfectly polished sameness, then you likely have a positioning issue that needs attention.

And if you’re unsure what your brand voice should truly sound like — or how to refine your message so it feels human and authoritative again — book a free clarity call with me.
