The Marketing Advice That Backfires for Small Businesses

The Marketing Advice That Backfires for Small Businesses

Why Templated Tactics Fail, and What to Do Instead

Have you ever followed a “sure-fire marketing tactic” that completely flopped?

You did everything they said:
Posted consistently.
Tweaked your funnel.
Tried those so-called high-converting headline formulas.

And when it didn’t work, you were left wondering:
Is it me? Did I miss something? Why is this working for everyone else but not for me?

I’m here to tell you it wasn’t because you didn’t try hard enough.
And it certainly wasn’t because you’re not smart or capable.

The truth is, the advice you followed, even if it came from a well-known, respected expert, wasn’t meant for you.

I know that feeling all too well.
Not just in business, but in a very personal way.

When “Proven” Advice Backfires

Over the last several years, I’ve worked hard to prioritize my health.

At one point, I lost over 100 pounds through sheer commitment, learning, and consistency. That was a huge victory.

I wish I could say the story ended there. But it didn’t.

Some of the weight started to creep back. So I doubled down.

I followed advice from some of the biggest names in the health and wellness industry. These were people with best-selling books, massive followings, and lots of client success stories.

I thought, If it worked for them, it should work for me.

Except it didn’t.

Following a keto diet? That made me feel deprived, even though it’s often positioned as the “healthiest” option.

Cardio several times a week? Instead of energizing me, it burned me out.

And trust me, it wasn’t for lack of effort!

I wasn’t slacking. I was doing the work.
But my body had other ideas.

Eventually, after a frustrating cycle of gains and losses, I realized something…what works for one person may not work for another.

We all have different needs, hormone profiles, histories, and goals. And generic advice, no matter how well-meaning, can backfire when it ignores our individuality.

The Same Is True in Business

If you’re a small business owner, you’ve probably followed some version of “proven” marketing advice:

  • Post every day on social media
  • Run Facebook ads to a lead magnet
  • Use sales funnels and email automations
  • “Just pick a niche” and start publishing content

Maybe you even hired someone who promised “10 leads a week” or handed you a templated strategy they said would work for any business.

But despite your best efforts…

  • You’re still not getting consistent results.
  • You’re attracting the wrong clients.
  • You’re discounting your rates.
  • You’re feeling overwhelmed and wondering, What am I doing wrong?

Let me assure you: It’s not you.

It’s the fit of the strategy.

Why Generic Marketing Advice Fails

The most common reason small business owners get stuck is simple:

They never fully define their brand positioning.

Without that clarity, all marketing becomes trial and error.

You’re guessing your way through business growth, and that’s exhausting.

Brand positioning is the foundation of everything.

It tells you:

  • Who you are
  • What makes you uniquely valuable
  • Who you’re best suited to serve
  • Why someone should choose you over any alternative

When you get clear on that? Everything changes.

  • Your marketing becomes simpler.
  • Your messaging becomes sharper.
  • Your clients become more aligned.
  • Your business growth becomes steady, not sporadic.

What Doesn’t Work for Small Businesses

Just like I had to stop eating like a 30-year-old fitness influencer with a totally different metabolism, you have to stop marketing like a big brand or a seven-figure course creator.

Here’s what doesn’t work for small service-based businesses:

  1. Copying tactics from influencers or online gurus who serve a different audience
  2. Using Canva templates that make you sound and look like everyone else
  3. Jumping on trends when your clients are craving consistency and trust
  4. Relying on vague, generic taglines that say nothing about what makes you different

Those tactics aren’t wrong, they’re just not built for you.

And just like the wrong workout can wear down your body, the wrong strategy can quietly wear down your business.

What Actually Works? Clarity First

What changed everything for me in my health journey was learning to listen to my body.

I stopped following cookie-cutter plans and started asking better questions:

  • How do I feel after this meal?
  • What kind of movement supports me today?
  • What’s realistic for my age, lifestyle, and energy levels?

The same mindset applies to your business.

Before you spend another dime or another hour on marketing…
Get radically clear on your foundation.

Because until you do, nothing will feel quite right.

You’ll keep tweaking your copy.
Trying new tools.
Signing up for the next free masterclass.
Hoping that this next “thing” will finally fix the problem.

But clarity doesn’t come from guessing. It comes from strategy.

A Resource to Help You Get Clear

I’ve taken my 20+ years of brand positioning experience and poured it into a step-by-step workbook called:

The ‘No More Wasted Marketing’ Workbook: A Step-by-Step Blueprint to Position You As the Only Logical Choice.

Inside, you’ll work through:

  • Your brand’s unique value
  • Your ideal client’s real decision-making process
  • What makes you stand out
  • Your client promise
  • Your signature method or framework

This isn’t another template.
It’s not fluff.

It’s a strategic clarity tool designed for real small business owners like you who are done wasting time and tired of not being seen.

And if you’d rather not go it alone, I invite you to book a complimentary Discovery Call.

We’ll talk through what’s working, what’s not, and what kind of guidance will get you from frustration to clarity.

You Deserve a Business That Feels Like You

Just like I had to stop chasing someone else’s version of healthy, you might need to stop chasing someone else’s version of success.

You’re not meant to be a copy of someone louder or flashier.
You’re here to build something rooted in who you are — your values, your expertise, your voice.

That kind of business doesn’t just feel better. It works better.

Because clarity isn’t just comforting, it’s profitable.
