5 Things to Focus on in 2020
Is social media marketing not working for you anymore?
Are you wondering what you should be changing in order to get better results?
In this Tea Time Tip: Marketing for Busy Entrepreneurs, I’m sharing 5 valuable tips on social media marketing for 2020. Learn what’s working, what’s no longer working and what to focus on more.
This video was recorded during a live Facebook broadcast on January 22,2020.
Here’s the top 5 things you need to do in 2020:
- Put less emphasis on “vanity metrics.” Instagram has tested getting rid of the “Like” button, and it looks like this could happen in 2020. This means that you’ll have to start looking more closely at your metrics and insights around user engagement, such as how many people are sharing and commenting on your posts.
- Focus on video. According to Social Media Today, video will make up 82% of all internet traffic in 2020. One of my favourites, Mari Smith, (the “Queen of Facebook”) recommends striving for a content ratio of 70% video, 20% image and 10% text/link posts. And, including links and CTAs on video and image posts.
Just when everyone seemed to get the memo that horizontal filming is best, vertical videos come along! This is because consumers watch a lot of things on smartphones. Instagram and Snapchat were the first to utilize vertical videos in Stories, and Instagram Television (IGTV) was next. This year, create vertical (9:16) micro-content for Instagram and Facebook. - Balance public and private conversations. Mark Zuckerberg announced his vision to unify Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp in 2019. In 2020, expect to see more private conversations between businesses and consumers.
You want to drive brand awareness using your public feeds on social media, and use private channels to engage one-on-one with your customers. For example, you could add a Messenger chatbot to your website to encourage these one-on-one conversations. - Build communities. We’ve seen LinkedIn groups make a comeback. These let your business create a discussion board related to your industry. This provides you with the opportunity to start a special interest group of like-minded people that’s specific to your product, service and/or expertise.
You can also create a Group linked to your Facebook Page and start creating your own community. - Use the right platforms for the right things. For example, Twitter is a go-to site for live breaking/trending news. Actually, Reddit is first, followed by Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. Twitter will continue to be an ideal place to live-feed your events, video news about your product or services and keep an eye on your competitors in real time.
The social media platforms you spend your time on will depend on your target audience. Use your demographics to decide where and when to share your content.
