Making a Commitment to Building Your Business

I shot this quick video about making a commitment to building your business while staying at one of my favourite bed and breakfasts, Blackberry Lane Bed & Breakfast. This is my go to hideaway to de-stress and recharge and is located less than an hour from where I live.

This eTip asks the question: How hard are you willing to work to make your business a success?

How hard are you willing to work to succeed?

My husband Daniel and I have very demanding schedules that begin at 5:30 am and don’t stop until about 8 pm at night.

It can be exhausting!

but it’s also extremely rewarding to have a successful business.

One of the things that dawned on me during this visit is how alike I am with Andy and Marlene, the owners of this B&B.

Since the B&B is located on a farm, when I arrived Marlene was decked out in full farming gear, working away keeping this place properly maintained. Her next task was to hop onto a riding mower and mow some acreage. After she was done she got to come in and start cooking!

Meanwhile Andy was busy at his full time job, which he does after he’s done his morning farm chores. When he finishes his day he heads home for even more farm chores. Their days are long and tough.

I’m familiar with that kind of a demanding schedule as I grew up on a hobby farm full of animals. It was a lot of work and my parents were always up well before I ever was just so they could feed the animals and maintain the farm (this included milking the family cow, Emma). This was all done while working full time jobs in Vancouver, which was an hour away in each direction.

This brings things back to my original question: how hard are you willing to work?

I hear a lot from clients about the distractions pulling them away from work. So the question then becomes: how important is your business to you if so many other things take priority?

You can’t magically succeed in business, so if you’re not able to commit to the business, don’t expect it to thrive. You have choices to make. Are you willing to make the sacrifices needed to build a successful business?

We’ve all read about the magical 4-hour work week but the number of people that kind of schedule is applicable to is minuscule.

How far are you willing to go and how hard will you work to make your business succeed?

When I first started eVision Media, my schedule was even more demanding. So even looking at my schedule now and how much I have to work, it took a lot just to get my business to where it is.

If you need help making the hard choices so you can succeed, please get in touch. I love to help people by mentoring them through their distractions so they prioritize their business and build the success they’re after.

That’s it for today’s eTip and don’t forget that if you liked what you saw here, please subscribe to our YouTube channel or newsletter so you can get updates and videos for small business entrepreneurs every week!

Until next time,
Susan Friesen

5 Useful Decision-Making Steps to Buying Your Next Business Program Sold at an Event

5 Useful Decision-Making Steps to Buying Your Next Business Program Sold at an Event

How to Avoid Making Impulsive Purchases from Success-Promising Gurus

I recently attended a 3-day business conference in Vancouver. There were about 500 people in attendance, all business owners and entrepreneurs who where there to network, learn and be inspired. You can also call Lee Rosen Miami for business consulting.

All in all, it was a great event that resulted in my meeting new people and gaining valuable insights that I brought home with me to infuse into my business.

The conference boasted nine high-profile speakers including thought leaders like Jack Canfield, Dr. John Gray and James Malinchak. Their talks were entertaining, insightful, informative and motivating.

They certainly learned the craft of being an influential presence on the stage well.

But make no mistake, each of these speakers were there with the sole purpose of promoting their wares and influencing the audience to purchase their key strategies, programs and courses that promised business success.

And they succeeded.

The volume of people that ran to the back of the room to grab their limited-time, extraordinary low-cost offering before it was sold out was mind boggling.

As a member of that audience, I was fascinated by what I was witnessing. Perhaps it was my state of mind or the confidence I already felt in my capabilities of achieving further business success, but I was not at all tempted to be a part of the crowd to run to the back of the room and grab a purchase.

I looked around and saw men and women who were involved in a variety of different businesses and industries. Many of whom where desperate to get that SECRET FORMULA that would transform their struggles into riches.

And the speakers on the stage knew this and played right into their hands.

Throughout the 3 days, the audience was presented with lots of solutions, advanced systems and formulas on how to achieve success in their business. But the problem is, not all proposed solutions were ideal for everyone.

But what is a business owner and entrepreneur to do?

They are attending such events to help them with their business so are naturally attracted to the offers made up on the stage.

To help you avoid making irrational and emotionally-based decisions when faced with the pressure of live event and even free webinar offers I have put together 5 steps on what to think about first before jumping in with the crowd and grabbing your purchase:

  1. Think things through first.

Ask yourself if this opportunity is truly going to get you a return on your investment if you make the purchase. What are you willing to commit to in order to get the most out of that investment?

The key here is to understanding success is not just going to happen by signing up but actually doing the work. Are you realistically willing to do the work? Are you going to be 100% committed to this or will you get home, set it aside, and promise to get to it when you get a chance?

None of these programs will get you the results these presenters are talking about if you’re not committed enough to follow through on every single step provided.

  2. Be objectively critical.

When these speakers are on the stage, they are sharing their best success stories possible – the cream of the crop. Often this reflects only a minor percentage of those who have taken the program.

Be objective. And don’t make emotionally-based decisions that compel you run to the back of the room and purchase. This is exactly what they are counting on.

  3. Decide if your business can truly benefit from what you will learn.

Just because they are telling you this on stage doesn’t mean it’s a perfect fit for you, your business model, and your goals.

As an example, if you have the gift of service and support, then more than likely you will not do well learning to be a speaker on stage despite that presenter saying “anyone can do this using my system and processes”.

If you have the gift of, say, music, then being a published author is probably not something you should pursue despite being provided with a “fool-proof, iron-clad method that will get you on the Amazon best seller list”.

Ask yourself if what this presenter is offering is exactly what you need to learn in order to reach your business goals or is there something better suited for you available elsewhere? Do you really need to learn all of this yourself or is hiring someone who is an expert in that area a better decision that will help reach your goals quicker without having to become an expert in that field first?

  4. Recognize the emotional manipulation that’s happening.

We see this all the time. Whether you’re attending conferences or online webinars there’s always a “limited time offer” that makes it irresistible to pass up.

Don’t let these “one-time-only” offers lead you into thinking this is the only chance you’ll ever get to take advantage of what’s being offered. It simply isn’t true. It’s a sales tactic that preys on people who make emotional decisions and don’t want to be left out or miss out on an incredible opportunity.

These programs will all still be offered after the hype ends. Even if that means paying $50 more, so be it. Give yourself time to objectively work through the pros and cons and decide whether it’s worth your investment or not.

Don’t let your emotions be triggered by the slick sales speech or written sales copy on a page.

  5. Do your research.

This may not necessarily be the case for headliner speakers we see on the stage, but sadly, there are a lot of very smooth-talking “gurus” out there who are nothing but smoke and mirrors. They offer a lot of hype but little substance.

Do your pocketbook a favour; before investing in any kind of program or product, research the person selling it first. Do a Google search and see if any bad reviews come up. Ask people in your social media groups if they’ve had any experience with that person and what were the results.

Your goal is to make an informed decision, not an emotional one based on the promises of the sales copy. And if you do encounter negative reviews – listen to your gut. So many times wrong decisions are still made because, as human beings, we’re highly influenced by emotions and we can easily justify our actions based on those promises despite finding evidence to the contrary.

After reading this, you might think I’m against purchasing programs and courses all together but that’s not the case at all. I’m not saying not to invest in business growth strategies, but instead to make informed, objective decisions on which investments to make in the first place.

The sad fact is that marketing can be a very manipulative process that is meant to create fear- and lack-based, emotional responses. The people we see on stage, as well as those that do highly visible free webinars, are masters at pulling these emotional triggers.

Simply be aware of that manipulation and follow the guide I outlined above to help you decide whether or not your business can truly benefit from that investment you’re being asked to make.

Do you have any stories of acting on impulse and regretting the purchase later?

To your ongoing success,
Susan Friesen

6 Keys to Overcoming the Fear to be GREAT for a Fulfilled Business Life

6 Keys to Overcoming the Fear to be GREAT for a Fulfilled Business Life

Are you an entrepreneur or business owner and don’t feel fulfilled?

I find the key to success lies within the fear to be great, which prevents many from moving forward into that greatness and feel better fulfilled.

Here’s 6 keys that will help you overcome this deep-seeded fear and gain a business life that has you feeling truly enriched and fulfilled.

  1. Resolutions

2017 is here, the beginning of yet another New Year, and the season for new resolutions and intentions has unfolded. But how will these really affect the quality of your business life in 2017?

It does not matter if millions are setting new intentions, numbers alone, do not prove them to be necessarily effective.

Whatever the resolutions, each of us know deep down that we are still bringing the same internal version of ourselves into the New Year. Resolutions therefore simply give the mind the idea that it is on a refreshed trajectory, when in fact nothing has changed.

  2. The Voice Inside Your Head

If the voice inside your head is saying ” I am not enough”, no matter how much will power is deployed to push harder, and work harder, in the end nothing but exhaustion will be felt in such a scenario.

If the voice inside your head is saying, “I can’t speak up because I am afraid to be rejected” it will be impossible for the entrepreneur to step outside their current comfort zone and explore new ways of business.

We have to do much more than becoming aware that our voice is not necessarily self-preserving. We have to dig deep to tackle this anguish driving aspect of ourselves.

And the crazy thing is that most of the time, we are not even aware of the real self sabotaging conclusions that we carry because they are deeply hidden in our unconscious, and so they are not even surfacing at the level of the mind.

Despite this lack of awareness, they totally control the destiny of our business life. Take for example an unknown belief : “I cannot have my freedom”, no matter how hard such a person tries to expand their business life, this hidden belief will result in a business experience that will suppress, but never bring abundance and total freedom.

  3. False Reinvention

So, for many of us, if we don’t want business as usual, we might consider a little bit of reinventing to adapt our ways. Most of this reinvention will happen using the mind, through affirmations, positivity, gratitude journals and ideas that the law of attraction will assist us, if we concentrate on visualizations for a better future.

We are encouraged to conjure up feelings, as if it has already happened. We are encouraged to create vision boards that we can focus on, so that our attention will bring growth in the areas that we predefine.

In modern day times, we tell our critical voice to “shut up” and suggest “we are awesome” instead. This of course gives us the impression we are correcting this inner state, but the hilarious part is that no one asks the deeper question – “Which voice did we use to tell the negative voice to shut up?”

The answer is shocking. It is, in fact, the same voice!!!! It is like a dog chasing its own tail- nothing has changed, but somehow we have the new impression that things have improved for us. The negative voice is told to shut up by the positive voice. Then the negative one speaks even stronger, and so the positive one has to work even harder! Round and round we go…

We work extremely hard, to maybe get a few successes but there is a but!

  4. False Successes

Don’t get me wrong, when someone has gone through the laborious task to tell their inner voice to shut up, they may feel a burst of energy to act on something that they might not have tried earlier, and of course this is good news! Some fear has been overcome, and new doors could open.

Many of the role models we see around us, prove that this theory helped them to be the business success stories that they are today. Oprah Winfrey swears by her gratitude journal, and Louise Hay proclaims affirmations will do the trick.

BUT the fear that we are not enough, hasn’t gone away, it is still lurking, and it will have the last say, and come to sabotage at its earliest opportunity. Mathematics says it has to. The energy is still there. Energy can only change form, but it can never disappear.

If energy cannot disappear, of course internal anxiety will remain too.

This is why people stay on the search for more…….deep down they know that there is a lurking fear that they themselves carry, even though they might not want to share that with the public that revere them, they know they have not fooled themselves.

The sincere ones employ new tools such as meditation to go deeper. The insincere ones continue to live a lie.

  5. The Real “TOOLS” for Permanent Change

So the real task is not to tell the inner voice to shut up, but to transform the inner voice, so that it no longer says, “I am not enough”. And for that to happen, there has to be a real knowing that you are in fact, absolutely enough. This takes courage to embody and the fear to be brilliant has to be overcome to facilitate such a presence.

Through practices such as meditation and advanced tools that transform unconsciousness, new insights can be gained. A knowing reveals itself and with that the understanding comes that these encounters could never be experienced through the mind, because the mind was creating all the problems in the first place.

The knowing that ” I am awesome” comes from a place within where we recognize the purity of who we are….and that resides deep within, in our being. When we meet our true face, we have that knowing.

Then we recognize that our core personality has to be transformed to meet the purity of our being. When our core personality is no longer lashing out, no longer angry with others, no longer jealous, bitter, resentful, insincere, greedy, manipulative etc., it begins to match the quality of our inner being.

We need advanced ways to permanently eliminate the fears and the root causes of the above darker side qualities that surface in each of us. This is the only route available to truly discover that we are enough. There is no other short cut. We might decide that releasing a few trapped emotions is helping but nothing awakens our real nature unless consciousness is heightened. This is the real work.

  6. The Truth of “I Am Great” / “I Am Awesome”

If we cannot say that all our actions are loving and pure, why would we lie to ourselves and say, “We are awesome”!!!?

Through UNDERSTANDING why our inner voice is actually saying “I am not enough” and clearing up the root causes and mis-beliefs, we can finally hold our head up and say,

    “I know who I am,
I know where I come from,
I know what I am here to do,
I know I am enough unto myself and a light unto myself”

There is a step in claiming and recognizing the revelation of what you know. What you know could prove to be too much for those around you. It may blind too many people, and thus this is where the fear comes in.

To reveal your brilliance and embody your magnificence, in total confidence is so alien in our world at large, that it might feel better to hide the light and not shine it too brightly.

When we have overcome this fear, the largest of them all, we can finally say:

“I am here to be brilliant”, “I am here to live in total fulfillment” and “I am here to be awesome, showing others how to be too”.

The voice inside your head will now be in total silence.

This is awesome and this is where we get to have a business life in which we are truly enriched and fulfilled.

Too Many Gurus: Why Less is More and How to Refocus

Too Many Gurus: Why Less is More and How to Refocus

Are you overwhelmed by the volume of advice you see and read each day by business and marketing experts?

It’s easy to get excited about trying new things in your business and ending up following a lot of experts on social media and subscribing to their eZines and newsletters.

But over time this can result in too many gurus, too much confusion and too little time to do everything they say you should be doing.

Following too many gurus can result in confusion and lack of getting things doneClick To Tweet

While it may seem like being a fan of several top experts is smart, following too many can actually fragment the results you are getting and hurt your overall success in the long run.

I often see this with new entrepreneurs where their head is literally spinning with ideas, but they are feeling way behind from not doing enough to grow their business, and they are confused with all the different directions they are being pulled.

As an example on how easy this can happen, one marketing guru suggests you do ‘x’ claiming that it’s really going to help you and resolve all your problems so you start doing ‘x’. Then another business development guru says ‘x’ is a waste of your time, you should do ‘y’ instead. Not to mention they rarely tell you HOW to do all of this, only that you should.

Sadly, there are more self-proclaimed experts now than ever before all wanting to give you the benefit of their advice and telling you about their formula for success. It could literally drive you crazy trying to follow everyone’s latest strategies, tactics and methods.

Stop it! It will drive you crazy to follow every guru's strategies, tactics and checklistsClick To Tweet

So what do you do?

First of all, be honest… are you guilty of following too many of these gurus? Have you signed up for several programs in hopes of getting the perfect step-by-step formula that will make you rich? Do you feel like you’re constantly chasing after the biggest and brightest shiny objects that promise all your problems will be solved?

If so, here’s 6 tips to help you kick your guru addiction and get better focused on skyrocketing your results:

  1. Determine the ONE thing that would help you grow your business the most.

What is it that you need to do? Do you need to create products? Improve your marketing? Boost profitability? Grow a team and take your business to the next level?

Once you decide your single most important goal, you can focus on that. And only that.
  2. Find select few experts in the area you most need.

Challenge yourself to become much more selective at whose advice you take from. Find a very select group of mentors who have something of true value to offer.

Look for experts who challenge your thinking and stretch your boundaries. Ensure they have something of substance to say and are not just all promotion.
  3. Go on an eZine Diet.  If you have subscribed to dozens of newsletters, chop that list down to the top 3 that will help you the most in this chosen area.  Unsubscribe to the rest.

Or try using a service like Unroll.me that groups the less important eZines into one daily rollup so they aren’t cluttering up your inbox.
  4. Cut Down Your Facebook Likes. If you are following a gazillion gurus, it can really distract you. Pare down your choices to those that offer value in their posts and speak to your primary goal.

To find the list of pages you’ve liked, go to your personal profile and find “Likes” in the row of options under your name. You may need to click the down arrow beside “More” to find it.
  5. Make Uninterrupted Time to Read Your Mentor’s Advice.  Think about it.  Ponder it.  Ask yourself how you can apply it and put it into action.

It’s no good if you read about a great concept and never implement it.  Follow-through is all about getting results.
  6. Go Deeper. If you really feel in alignment with the teachings of your mentor, find a way to take it to the next level. Buy a product. Join a coaching group they are leading. Hire their services.

Or consider individual mentoring with them.  When considering the cost of working with them, weigh it carefully against the value of the results you will achieve.  Often times the price of mentoring will be returned to you many times by the personal and business gains you receive.

What’s the opportunity cost of not coaching and staying right where you are?

No matter what type of business you run, having a mentor to help guide you can increase your odds of success. eVision Media can give you step-by-step guidance on marketing strategies that work! Get Your Free 30 Minute Strategy Session Today!

What it Takes to Create an Award-Winning Business

14 Strategies We Attribute to Our Recent Business Excellence Award

What it Takes to Create an Award-Winning Business

Out of the blue, I received an email from the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce one day notifying me that eVision Media was nominated for a 2016 Business Excellence award.

Say what?

Once I got past my shock and disbelief that they must have the wrong Susan… it began to sink in that someone out there thought we were worthy enough of this nomination. Wow, what an honour!

Part of the nomination process consisted of a 30-minute interview in front of a 3-judge panel. Imagine being forced to actually brag about yourself for a half an hour!

Talk about squirming in my seat!

winning Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce business excellence award 2016Fast forward to last week where the awards ceremony took place. Much to my relief, our category was  up first so I could relax the rest of the evening.

To be honest, I wasn’t all that anxious – I knew the odds of winning was only 1 in 7 so I waited patiently for the winner’s name to be announced, not at all expecting it to be us.

But it was! eVision Media was declared the winner!

SAY WHAT???

Shock and disbelief once again came over me as I took a moment to grasp what just happened. Walking to the stage was quite the blur but I managed to do it without tripping up the stairs to get our award. 🙂

In the aftermath of winning this wonderful recognition, I reflected some more about that judge’s interview and how they deemed us the winner from the other worthy nominees in our category.

With that in mind, I wanted to share some of the attributes I feel helped us win this prestigious award.  Without further ado, here’s what it took for us to create an award-winning business:

  1. Be Passionate About What You Do

eVision Media is not the first business I’ve created; there’s been plenty others ranging from creating craft pieces to faux finish painting. But no matter what I did, I was very passionate about it.

Don’t waste your time trying to run a business just to make money. You’re going to tire of it very quickly and it will be harder to make sales.

But when you’re passionate about what you do, others will immediately see that and will be drawn to you like a magnet.

  2. Love Working With the People You Serve and Offer Exceptional Customer Service

One of the truest joys I receive is the knowing how much we are able to help a new business owner get their online presence up and running. Being a part of their joy at seeing their dream materialize into something tangible gives me just as much joy.

If you avoid answering the phone or responding to emails because you dread having to talk to a client, then you need to adjust your marketing so you attract the right people to work with.

If you don’t love who you’re working with, then it’s hard to establish a successful business that needs to cater to your clients by making customer service a #1 priority. And that means answering the phone, responding to emails in a prompt manner, and treating every person as if they were your only client. And when you’re attracting your perfect ideal client, then this should be easy to do.

Make your business about them, not you. Just remember, if you had no clients, then you’d have no business.

Make your business about your clients, not you. If you have no clients, you have no business.Click To Tweet
  3. Know Your Stuff

Before even thinking about starting a web development/digital marketing business, I ensured I got the education I needed first. I attended the Vancouver Film School in their Multi-Media program and then later earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Computer Information Systems (with an A+ GPA).

Not to mention the countless online courses I’ve taken over the years to ensure my skills are kept up-to-date with this ever changing industry.

Sadly, I see a lot of entrepreneurs wanting to start a business with not a lot of skills or experience under their belt and then they wonder why they’re struggling.

Reading a book or taking one on-line course is probably not enough to reach award-winning status. But if you’re passionate about building a successful business, you’ll find a way to ensure you become as qualified as needed.

  4. Be Committed

Is working 15 hour days, 6-7 days a week committed enough? Yep, that’s what Daniel and I do every week. We have to in order to fulfil points 2 and 3 above.

It takes a lot of time and effort to ensure your clients are taken care of properly. You also need a “do whatever it takes” level of commitment.

You might not need to work such long hours as us and trust me, we’re continually working towards lessening that kind of volume but until then, we are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our business is successful. Are you?

Are you willing to do whatever it takes to ensure your business is successful?Click To Tweet
  5. Be Consistent

Consistency shows up in many forms when running a successful business. For me, it’s being consistent with my message, my brand, my Social Media presence, my newsletters, my team management, and the level of quality we bring to our clients.

Do I miss sometimes? Absolutely. But being consistent in these areas are very important to me, and I do what needs to be done in order to show up the best I can for my team and our clients.

Without consistency, it’s hard to create brand ambassadors (such as the ones who nominate you for an award), loyal team members, and a steady flow of clients.

Whatever you have decided to commit to, be consistent at it and you’ll be amazed at how things start to flow your way.

Whatever you decide to commit to, be consistent and you’ll be amazed at how things flow your way.Click To Tweet
  6. Surround Yourself With a Dedicated and Knowledgeable Team

I started off as a one-woman show. Because of my educational background, I was able to do the design, build and marketing of a website quite easily. I’m what you would call a “generalist”, someone who knows a lot of about a lot of things and is a specialist in a few areas.

But my one-woman show was not going to create a successful business. Especially in this technologically-driven industry. It quickly became apparent my skillset was only going to get me so far.

So my first hire was someone who could offset my biggest weakness. Warren was a student at UFV and applied for my part time programmer position. He was a perfect complement to eVision Media and the moment he came on board, I was relieved of having to do all the site builds myself. I could then take that time and focus on building the business instead.

It’s tough to try and do everything yourself when it comes to running a business. Sure, there are expenses involved in hiring but if you hire smart, keep an eye on your bottom line, and know when to let go of those that aren’t serving you best, your business will escalate far quicker than if you try to struggle with everything yourself.

This topic is worthy of a whole article itself so I encourage you to read How to Take a Solo-Entrepreneurship to the Next Level for more.

  7. Have Honesty, Authenticity and Gratitude be a Part of Your Daily Life

It’s sad I even need to list this as an attribute but I’ve been in business long enough to know not everyone adheres to these principles.

To me, this is a no-brainer – I’m not certain I could live any other way?

But judging from the stories I hear from new clients about how they were treated by their previous web developer, it sounds like many people need to be reminded of this.

No business will thrive without honesty and integrity. And a little secret: gratitude will not only make your business thrive, but your whole life too. Give it a try and see what I mean.

No business will thrive without honesty and integrity. Plus the secret sauce: gratitudeClick To Tweet
  8. Persevere

Every business, including ours, has its ups and downs. The key to success is to not let those “downs” overcome your enthusiasm. Pick yourself back up, learn from whatever lesson there was to be learned, and keep moving forward.

If we had quit when we only had $20 credit left on our credit cards at Christmas time just a handful of years ago, we wouldn’t be award winners now!

The key to business success is to not let your 'downs' overcome your enthusiasm.Click To Tweet
  9. Invest in Your Business

  10. Building eVision Media has been one investment after another. It never ends really.

There’s always something that needs to be worked on. Here’s a short list of my recommendations on where you need to invest in your business:

    1. Branding & Website
    2. Marketing
    3. Education
    4. Building a Team
Building your business means investing in it continuallyClick To Tweet
  11. Understand You’re Running a Business, Not a Hobby.

I think this is an important distinction to make and one many entrepreneurs aren’t differentiating.

I’ve always looked at eVision Media as a business and that’s mostly due to my business mind and having a business degree.

But for those that simply are passionate about something and have a dream to make money off of it, it’s hard to know exactly HOW to turn that dream into a business.

They end up blindly doing what they think they should be doing, all by themselves, in order to save money (or not spend money they don’t have) and hope for the best.

If this sounds familiar, I’m adding another business investment to consider as your top priority: A business coach or mentor. ASAP. Otherwise, you’ll probably end up just running a hobby.

Entrepreneurs: It's important to differentiate if you're running a business or a hobbyClick To Tweet
  12. Set up a Systemized Business Structure

I’ve worked with a lot of clients over the years. Some amaze me at how organized and systemized they are. And others, well, not so much.

Having a systemized business structure in place is the only reason I haven’t gone insane with my daily workload.

Here’s the tools we use to be more organized, efficient and less stressed.

Having a systemized business structure in place will keep you sane.Click To Tweet
  13. Get Comfortable With Sales

Sales. It’s a dirty word for many entrepreneurs and business owners alike. Me too. I hate to think of myself as a “sales person” but at the end of the day, if we’re not selling our wares, we don’t have a business.

Now that’s not to say you need to become a pushy, in-your-face predator. Far from it.

Remember attribute #1 about being passionate? That’s what you need. People will trust your passion and will respond to it. But be careful, sometimes passion can be too intense and will turn people away.

Find your sweet spot as to what resonates with your ideal clients and keep working at it. But do embrace the fact you’re selling your wares and learn some strategies that fit with your personality and comfort level that will work.

When it comes to sales, people will trust your passion and respond to it.Click To Tweet
  14. Give Back

Giving back is an imperative attribute to have when building a successful business. We give back in several ways, here’s some ideas to consider that we do:

    • Offer discounted prices for non-profits
    • Volunteer your services to community groups
    • Send cash donations to worthy charities you believe in
    • Make purchases that support worthy causes
    • Donate door prizes and/or silent auction items for fund raising activities
    • And support your own clients whenever you can

Giving back is an imperative attribute to have when building a successful business.Click To Tweet
  15. Be Accessible

When new clients approach me due to being disenchanted with their existing web developer or marketer, the most often complaint I hear is they can never get a hold of the person. Either they take forever to respond to an email or never answer their phone.

I think I’m going to write a book on how NOT to run a successful business based on this alone. It boggles my mind when I consistently hear stories like this. How are these people keeping a business going with such poor service and accessibility?

I have a policy to answer emails within a day of receipt. I often exceed that policy but sometimes the volume is too much and I get delayed in responding. Same thing with the phone. If we’re available to answer, we do so. If we’re not, we’ll call the person back right away.

Being accessible provides peace of mind to our clients; they know we care enough about them to take care of their needs in a timely manner. ‘nuff said.

Being accessible brings client peace of mind; it shows you care about them and their needs.Click To Tweet

There you have it. My honest take on what created eVision Media to be an award-winning business. Maybe I need to write a book about this because, honestly, I could have added more but, it’s coming into the 15th hour on this Sunday night of working so I’ll leave it at that.

What about you? What would you add to the list? Please leave a comment below, I’d love to hear from you!

To your success,

How to Take a Solo-Entrepreneurship to the Next Level

How to Take a Solo-Entrepreneurship to the Next Level

5 Members Every Growing Business Needs on Their Team

Many businesses begin as a solo-entrepreneurship. With one person who has a vision, passion and skill that compels them embark on a journey so they can make a difference in the world and build a successful business along the way.

But the truth of the matter is, no one can build a successful, thriving business singlehandedly.

No one can build a successful, thriving business singlehandedlyClick To Tweet

One person can’t possibly possess all of the skills needed to carry out day-to-day business and marketing operations. Not well anyway.

As solo-entrepreneurs build their business, it’s a natural progression to surround themselves with a support team in order to avoid becoming stagnant and making costly mistakes.

After all, they simply don’t know what they don’t know when it comes to charting new territory in the business world.

When I began building my team years ago, I started by hiring people who offset my weaknesses.

Being a generalist in the web development/online marketing field made that a bit tricky because there was a lot that I could do myself. But as technology evolved and I got busier, it became clear in order to expand my business, I needed to bring in qualified resources so I could provide more value to my clients.

We all have strengths and weaknesses and if we want our business to be successful, it’s important to have others on our team who are more capable at certain tasks than we are.

The challenge is to be honest enough to be able to admit where our skills fall short and where we could use help in offsetting them.

Be honest enough to admit where your skills fall short & where you need help in your businessClick To Tweet

I had a conversation with a visionary client the other day after he realized his business was in a state of disarray due to him trying to manage it all himself (or hiring the wrong people for the wrong reasons to help him). He was asking who he needed on his team so he could better focus on what he was good at. So below is a resulting list of what I shared with him.

Here’s 5 essential team members and resources every solo business person needs when they are ready to grow to the next level:

  1. Financial Person

Someone to take care of the bookkeeping, tax filings, payroll etc. This person doesn’t need to be on the payroll, just have someone available that you can outsource this work to so they can free up your valuable time and let them do what they do best.

  2. Legal Representative

It’s always good to have access to legal advice, especially when it comes to creating contracts and even for debt collection.

  3. Administrative Assistant

This type of person can end up being a hugely valuable resource on your team that will free up a ton of your time so you can focus on your business instead of all of the little details.

Here’s a brief list of what this type of assistant can help you with:

    1. Calendar management. Have your assistant set up your appointments for you (or use an automated service like Acuity.)
    2. Team or project management where they are responsible for ensuring delegated tasks are done accurately and on time.
    3. Customer service liaison where they take care of all client questions and concerns.
    4. Email management where they can manage your inbox for you and delegate to appropriate team members instead of you being the middleman.
    5. Affiliate management. If your business includes selling online programs where affiliates and other partnerships are involved, an affiliate manager can keep everything organized and running smoothly.

Depending on your type of  business, you can probably think of many other areas that an assistant could help you with including doing personal errands if they are local.

  4. Social Media Manager

Let’s face it, social media is a big time drainer. But in today’s marketing world, it’s a necessity for every business to have a social media presence.

Even though you do not want to delegate all social media activities to others, a social media manager can help by creating and scheduling daily posts, being a customer service representative, posting news and updates, sharing blog articles, uploading YouTube videos and much more.

Qualified social media managers can also take on the marketing tasks of creating and fulfilling promotional campaigns including Facebook ads.

  5. Website & Marketing Team

Notice I didn’t say a “website guy or gal” as in a single person. There are many different components that make up a website and it’s rare one single person can be really good at them all.

So having a website team as a resource will ensure all of the areas that are needed to create, manage and promote an effective website are in place such as:

Every business is different and these roles are the essentials for new entrepreneurs but can easily be added to depending on the industry you are in and the type of business you want to create.

It also doesn’t hurt to have a business mentor or coach to help guide you through all the different areas that you might not be thinking of too.

So if you are a solo-entrepreneur and are getting overwhelmed or too busy at trying to learn and do everything yourself, perhaps it’s time to consider the benefits of having someone on your team who can support further growth and sustainability for your business.

If you're overwhelmed or too busy, consider the benefits of a team to help grow your businessClick To Tweet

The first step is determining your weaknesses and finding suitable people to offset those.

The second step is to take action. And if you’re wanting a web and marketing team who will be your trustworthy champion every step of the way, consider eVision Media as that valuable resource you’ve been needing.

I’d love to hear from you: have you started to surround yourself with a team yet?

To your success,

What’s Not ‘Feeling On Purpose’ in Your Business All About?

What’s Not ‘Feeling On Purpose’ All About?

As an entrepreneur it’s most likely you have had your fair share of ups and downs in your business.

It may be around finances, relationships, circumstances and situations that got out of control. You found solutions to your problems and forged ahead growing your business.

Unless you have settled your very poor credit loans, you will never escape from it. You can apply for debt restructuring just to buy time to repay your debts. You can also negotiate with your creditor to give you a better repayment condition. If you are able to solve this, then getting cash loans next time would be easier.

And you felt good about it.

Now I’d like to ask you a really important question about how you feel when you are working ‘on and in’ your business.

Do you absolutely love what you do? Are you passionate about it?  Are there some tasks you would just rather give to someone else so you can get on with what you love to do?

You might be like most entrepreneurs who go through work phases where you love something you are doing when you first started out but then over time, the work or job loses it’s appeal.

You might even feel drained, resentful and even become less competent than you were when you first started. You may even suffer from a bit of burn-out where ‘life seems to be sucked right out of you.”

If you do, you are not alone and that may be because you haven’t really found your ‘Sacred Gifts’.

When you really ‘feel on purpose’ you are most likely using your sacred gifts even if you are not aware of them.  You do have skills and talents that certainly can have you feeling good about using them but there are a few key differences:

Skills – you can learn skills throughout your lifetime and you may even find enjoyment using them. Or you may learn them, use them, but not necessarily really get enjoyment from them.

Talents – you are born with certain talents that make you feel happy when you are using them. You may have a talent for writing, painting, swimming, photography, singing etc. but you do these more for your own personal pleasure and enjoyment.

Sacred Gifts – you are born with these, a gift from Source/Universe/God. The bigger difference between skills, talents and sacred gifts is that they are always for the benefit of someone else.

According to Monique MacDonald the Creator of the ‘Discover Your Sacred Gifts’ program there are 24 and we all have 3 – 5 of them.

So when you look at this diagram ‘Where do you feel most on purpose in your work life?’ decide where you are right now in your business.

Sacred gifts and feeling on purpose

Now that you have decided how to fix your credit, I’ll give you some clues about where you can tell that you may be using some of your Sacred Gifts.

These are 4 Signs of a Sacred Gift in you:

  1. FEEDBACK – listen to what people say to you. Do you often have people saying WOW that’s really a gift you did that so easily OR I feel so much better after talking with you?
  2. REPEATED PATTERNS – you were born with these gifts so think about repeated patterns you may have had from earlier in your life. Did you always like to teach, nurse, nurture, encourage others?
  3. ENERGIZING – this is when ‘time flies’ – you feel so energized you can even forget to eat! Pay attention to the levels of satisfaction you feel in your business right now and even in the past. What really juiced you?
  4. EXTRAORDINARY RESULTS – are you really getting ‘extra-ordinary’ results with some of the work that you do? Does it seem effortless but others are amazed at the results you get?

Using your Sacred Gifts can leave you feeling totally on purpose by allowing you to make a difference in the lives of others, all the while having great meaning for you. Sacred gifts can be dormant because as often happens for many people, ‘life’ takes over and those sacred gifts get shelved for the time being.

It’s interesting  to note that it is just important for you to know what gifts you do not have as the ones you do have!

When you know you don’t have a gift you look for someone in your business who has that gift and hire them to do what you do not love to do! You don’t have to be ‘all things to all people’ in your business!

The Entrepreneurial Bright and Shiny Object Syndrome Exposed

The Entrepreneurial Bright and Shiny Object Syndrome Exposed

What You Need to Know Before You Sign Up for Yet Another Program

There’s an insidious travesty happening in the entrepreneurial world and I’ve stayed silent about it long enough.

It’s time to expose what’s really happening to unsuspecting entrepreneurs and business owners when it comes to seeking the perfect answer to their business needs.

You probably already know it as chasing after the bright and shiny object syndrome.

It happens when the perceived need to learn more, be more and do more outweighs the need to actually get clients and run a business.

Are you a victim of the Bright and Shiny Object Syndrome?Click To Tweet

Why The Bright & Shiny Object Syndrome Happens

New entrepreneurs, especially women, often horde a deep-seeded secret that weighs them down and prevents them from growing their business to the heights they are perfectly capable of, but often don’t realize it.

That secret is the debilitating knowing they will be exposed as a fraud.

I know this because I too had this fear years ago.

It kept me playing small.

It stopped me from stepping outside of my comfort zone.

It dictated all of my business decisions from how much to charge to how I should be positioned in my industry to whom my ideal clients were.

The thought of being exposed as a fraud far outweighed any voice of reason that declared otherwise. It was a powerful force that controlled my every move.

But I had no idea this was going on. I wasn’t consciously aware of how much my actions were based upon that one fact: Feeling like I was a fraud.

But was I really a fraud? Hardly.

Feeling like a fraud in business is more common than you think, but rarely accurateClick To Tweet

My educational background and previous business skills and experience put me far above the level of many of my competitors in the web development and digital marketing space. But I still found a way to discount all of that.

It wasn’t enough.

I needed to learn more.

Clearly they know far more than I do – just look at how “successful” they are.

They know the “secret”.

So what did I do about it? I signed up for every program I could in order to find out what that secret was.

I embarked to find that perfect formula to follow. That magic system that would take me from point A to point B easily and effortlessly.

That thing that would make me successful.

Once I completed these programs, THEN I’d skyrocket my success!

Not.

And it’s probably not going to work for you either.

Yes, you’ll get some new insights out of the training. You’ll learn a few things along the way. But it won’t be enough.

And that’s because it’s not really what you need. Not by a long shot.

More than likely all those programs will just result in you feeling more overwhelmed and confused than ever before. How on earth are you going to find the time to implement all this, let alone understand how to do it all?

Signing up for every program, webinar & training available will result in confusion & overwhelmClick To Tweet

There’s only so much time in the day and wouldn’t you prefer to be working on what you’re passionate about instead? The reason why you went into business to begin with?

Here’s the deal

I can’t tell you how many struggling entrepreneurs I have worked with over the years. They aren’t able to reach successful heights in their business and the first (and often only) thing they will blame is themselves.

Their inner voice is screaming at them:

  • You don’t know enough.
  • You need to learn more.
  • You are clearly in way over your head – what were you thinking anyway?
  • You’re better off just quitting before you are exposed as the fraud you really are.

This may sound very familiar to you too.

So what does an aspiring entrepreneur do when they have thoughts like these? They sign up for every course, program, system, webinar, teleseminar, telesummit imaginable.

They become addicted to learning.

In their quest to no longer feel like a fraud, they embark on a mission to learn every single aspect about running a business they can. They feel they MUST learn how to:

  • Figure out who their ideal client is (even though they’re not sure what to do with that info once they have it)
  • Build a website themselves (even though technology has never been a friend of theirs)
  • Design their own logo and marketing materials (even though they have never had any formal training in graphic design)
  • Set up a sales funnel (even though they’re not really sure what that is)
  • Write the sales copy on their website and landing pages (Even though writing does not come easy for them)
  • Do Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on their website (even though they aren’t sure what that means)
  • Conduct webinars and teleseminars in order to launch their new program (even though they don’t have a program to launch yet)
  • Get on stage and be a speaker… write a book… participate in JV partnerships… hold workshops…. The list goes on and on!

What results from all of this? Entrepreneurs are spending SO much time and money on learning all of these skillsets that aren’t a part of their core competency, they aren’t left with any time or energy to focus on their own business!

And here’s the insidious part of it all:

The people who are selling you these programs and systems know full well you are prime for the picking. They are capitalizing on your fears and are making loads of money doing so.  They are counting on you feeling you MUST know all of this stuff before you can be successful at your business.

They also know that once they have your attention, you are prime to be “upsold” on higher-end programs or at least make affiliate commissions by referring other products/systems/platforms you MUST have.

Their business survival depends on it.

“BUT SUSAN!” I can hear you saying out loud… “in order for me to be successful, I have to have all of these things in place, and I can’t afford to hire anyone to do it all for me!”

Yes. But.

There’s a couple of falsehoods in that statement:

  • You do NOT need a website or marketing materials (yes, that’s coming from a web developer and online marketer!). Not right away at least. I sure didn’t have those things in place when I first started.
  • You do NOT need complex marketing funnels and fancy lead generating downloads
  • You Do NOT need a huge list or any list at all for that matter
  • You do NOT need to have every duck lined up in a neat row before you can start talking to clients and generating business.

Eventually, sure, you can work towards incorporating all of that into your business and marketing model. But not until you can afford to have it done properly. Wasting your time and money on learning how to do it all yourself is simply that – a waste of time and money.

And that’s because you will never learn as much as what the pros know in those key areas to get the same kinds of results by doing it yourself. You simply can’t know it all.

Plus that deep-seeded fear is also going to do whatever it takes to stop you in your tracks.

What You Really Need: Believe in Yourself

All you need to start and run a successful business is to trust yourself, your knowledge, your expertise and your ambitious drive to do what it takes to make it work. And most of all, you need the confidence in yourself that you are absolutely, unequivocally more than capable of bringing your business vision to fruition.

Your passion, energy, drive and vision is the fuel that moves you forward and creates the opportunities you need to make your business successful. Not all of those programs you’ve signed up for.

The more you believe in yourself, the more opportunities will materialize that will get you one step closer to achieving your goals.

Will you be rich in 30 days like many sales pages promise? Unlikely. But if you are wanting to build a sustainable business, you probably don’t want that kind of huge growth anyway.

Stop believing all of the hyped-up promises we are bombarded by everywhere we turn and instead, start believing you already know what you need to move forward.

Stop believing your are a fraud and start trusting you are more than capable of successClick To Tweet

And of what you don’t know, the right help at the right time will show up for you.

Now go. Trust yourself. Build a sustainable business with confidence and kick that false nagging voice that tells you you’re a fraud out the window. Stop giving away your power to those that are hungry for your money and make the right choices for you based on confidence, not fear.

You have a vision you need to fulfil and have no time for those kinds of mental blocks slowing you down!

To your success,

How Committed Are You To Your Business?

Today’s eTip asks you an important question – just how committed are you to your business?

Today I want to ask you a question, just how committed are you to your business?
Over the years I’ve noticed some entrepreneurs are a bit lackadaisical about their approach to their business. They’ll take tons of time off, especially during the summer.

They have lots of reasons not to work on their business; either their kids need them or their parents need them or their husband needs them. The laundry is far more important than actually working on their business…

So that’s why I’m asking that question today because if you are not really super committed to actually creating a business as opposed to a hobby or finding that next to ‘get rich quick scheme’ and just making a load money that you think you can make watching all of these gurus online.

Think about that… how committed are you to your business?

How committed are you to your business?Click To Tweet

There is no right or wrong answer. Of course I’m not judging you here. I just want to help you clarify what is it that you are willing to do, what is it that you are willing to commit to in order to make your business actually a success, if that’s what you want.

It may be best to even define what success means to you.

Sometimes making money is not the ultimate goal here. Sometimes you need to feel more fulfilled, feel like you are following your life’s purpose.

Whatever that means to you, make a commitment.

Make a commitment to actually fulfill whatever your dream is and not waste any time and let excuses get in the way of preventing you from fulfilling that dream.

Do a one-year or five-year plan. Try to think about what is it that you really want to accomplish. Are you just making some extra cash or are you really trying to build a business?

If you are really trying to build a business, what exactly are you committed to? Are you going to work five, six, seven days a week or are you going to allow a lot of excuses to get in the way to stop you from doing the work that needs to be done in order to create a lifelong sustainable business?

Let me know what you think! Leave a comment below and if you have any questions or comments I’ll be sure to answer.

Knowing How to Take That Next Step to Success

Knowing How to Take That Next Step to Success

Have you ever known exactly where you wanted to go, but hesitated because you didn’t know exactly how to get there?

That is perfectly natural and very human.

From a survival standpoint, we all want to know what’s in store for us in order to determine whether or not the risks outweigh the reward.

The only trouble with this way of thinking is that avoiding a step due to un-surety keeps you from ever accomplishing your dreams. It’s safe – but a true waste of a wonderful life.

Fortunately, YOU are probably really good at handling whatever comes your way.

Almost every day you manage to avert disaster and arrive safely on the other side of hundreds of challenges, small and large.

Drawing confidence from this vast well of experience, surrounding yourself with positive people who are equally driven, and pulled by the desire to achieve your dreams, you can rise to meet the road ahead, even if you can only see 3 feet of it.

And guess what…most of the time, the 3 feet in front of you is all you have to deal with.

Handle that and then there’s the next 3 feet…and the next…and as the old saying goes, “By the yard it’s hard, but it’s a cinch by the inch.” The story you tell yourself about the dangers again is just that – a story – nothing more. So change the story and take that step.

No matter what dream you’re chasing or difficulty you’re facing, if you just take the next step, you’ll almost certainly arrive at your destination safe, sound & successful. You will have a life well-lived!
