Too Many Gurus: Why Less is More and How to Refocus

Are you overwhelmed by the volume of advice you see and read each day by business and marketing experts? 

It’s easy to get excited about trying new things in your business and ending up following a lot of experts on social media and subscribing to their eZines and newsletters.

But over time this can result in too many gurus, too much confusion and too little time to do everything they say you should be doing.

While it may seem like being a fan of several top experts is smart, following too many can actually fragment the results you are getting and hurt your overall success in the long run.

I often see this with new entrepreneurs where their head is literally spinning with ideas, but they are feeling way behind from not doing enough to grow their business, and they are confused with all the different directions they are being pulled.

As an example on how easy this can happen, one marketing guru suggests you do ‘x’ claiming that it’s really going to help you and resolve all your problems so you start doing ‘x’. Then another business development guru says ‘x’ is a waste of your time, you should do ‘y’ instead. Not to mention they rarely tell you HOW to do all of this, only that you should.

Sadly, there are more self-proclaimed experts now than ever before all wanting to give you the benefit of their advice and telling you about their formula for success. It could literally drive you crazy trying to follow everyone’s latest strategies, tactics and methods.

So what do you do?

First of all, be honest… are you guilty of following too many of these gurus? Have you signed up for several programs in hopes of getting the perfect step-by-step formula that will make you rich? Do you feel like you’re constantly chasing after the biggest and brightest shiny objects that promise all your problems will be solved?

If so, here’s 6 tips to help you kick your guru addiction and get better focused on skyrocketing your results:

  1. Determine the ONE thing that would help you grow your business the most.
     
    What is it that you need to do? Do you need to create products? Improve your marketing? Boost profitability? Grow a team and take your business to the next level?
     
    Once you decide your single most important goal, you can focus on that. And only that.
  2. Find select few experts in the area you most need.
     
    Challenge yourself to become much more selective at whose advice you take from. Find a very select group of mentors who have something of true value to offer.
     
    Look for experts who challenge your thinking and stretch your boundaries. Ensure they have something of substance to say and are not just all promotion.
  3. Go on an eZine Diet.  If you have subscribed to dozens of newsletters, chop that list down to the top 3 that will help you the most in this chosen area.  Unsubscribe to the rest.
     
    Or try using a service like Unroll.me that groups the less important eZines into one daily rollup so they aren’t cluttering up your inbox.
  4. Cut Down Your Facebook Likes. If you are following a gazillion gurus, it can really distract you. Pare down your choices to those that offer value in their posts and speak to your primary goal.
     
    To find the list of pages you’ve liked, go to your personal profile and find “Likes” in the row of options under your name. You may need to click the down arrow beside “More” to find it.
  5. Make Uninterrupted Time to Read Your Mentor’s Advice.  Think about it.  Ponder it.  Ask yourself how you can apply it and put it into action.
     
    It’s no good if you read about a great concept and never implement it.  Follow-through is all about getting results.
  6. Go Deeper. If you really feel in alignment with the teachings of your mentor, find a way to take it to the next level. Buy a product. Join a coaching group they are leading. Hire their services.
     
    Or consider individual mentoring with them.  When considering the cost of working with them, weigh it carefully against the value of the results you will achieve.  Often times the price of mentoring will be returned to you many times by the personal and business gains you receive.

2 Ways to get More Views on your Facebook Business Page

Today’s eTip is about getting more views on posts for your Facebook business page.

Today I thought I’d talk a little bit about Facebook. As you may know Facebook has recently changed its algorithms, yet again, where it has decreased the amount of people that are actually seeing the posts we post to our Facebook page.

So what we need to do as entrepreneurs is counteract that the best we can.
There are two things that I wanted to tell you about today.

One of them is your frequency – the amount of times you post on your Facebook page.

You should be posting three or four times a day with new content so that Facebook will start to realize you’ve got some good quality content coming in resulting in more and more people will see your posts.

But don’t post all at once; otherwise, only those people who are on line at that moment will see them so spread them out throughout the day.

You can schedule them using a scheduler like Hootsuite where you can schedule your post to go out later on in the day so you don’t have to actually be on line those times.

The other way is to create original content. Yes it’s fine to be sharing other people’s content, but you don’t want to be doing that all the time just like you don’t want to be putting promotional posts on all the time.

You want to be coming up with your own original content such as a quote, a tip, a helpful hint – something that will generate some interest. Something that you find will be of value for your followers.

Make it as original as you can and that will get you a little bit better exposure because people are going to come to know that you’ve got good stuff being posted on your page and you are worth following.

I’ve been working with several mentoring clients lately who are looking ahead and coming up with a goal sheet on what they want to accomplish next year. With the end of the year almost here, now is definitely a great time to be doing this exercise.

What often happens when big goals like this are solidified on paper and you are opening yourself up to the possibilities of what could be achieved, you may also be closing the door on what’s truly possible for you…

As an example, at first you may find yourself listing your big goals like “hold my first virtual summit”, “earn $100,000 in sales” or “write my second book”.

Then as you review the list your inner gremlin starts to kick in…

“This isn’t realistic”
“I don’t even know where to begin to achieve this” 
“I’ll never find the time to make that happen.” 
“Who am I trying to fool here!”
“I can’t possibly…”

And before you know it you’ve become your own dream killer. 

But it doesn’t have the be that way.

    Don’t edit yourself.  Let the ideas flow. The more specific you are about the details, the better.  The Law of attraction is powerful when you visualize every detail about what you want.

  • Create a plan to make it happen. Napoleon Hill once said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” Own the confidence that the dream that’s planted in your heart will happen.

  • Believe firmly in your mind and heart that this WILL happen. Let your passion take over and provide the fuel to drive you forward. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

    Instead of “How can I…” (a limiting question) Ask yourself “In what way can I…..” (a question that comes from a place of abundance saying there IS an answer.)

  • Feel the fear and do it anyway.  There’s nothing more liberating than pushing through where you are unsure and then realizing success.  The exhilaration you’ll feel when you push past your own limits is so empowering.
  • Own the vision of your goal already accomplished.  Make a dream map with pictures of your goal completed.  Write affirmations that show your gratitude for accomplishing this task (before it’s occurred).  “I am so happy and grateful now that….”

  • Keep taking steps forward.  When you step out in faith, the universe conspires on your part to bring you what you desire.  An object in motion, stays in motion.  It takes much more energy to move a stopped object forward.
  • Have trust. Let go of the need to control everything.  Believe in the abundance of the universe to attract the resources, tools, people, and opportunities you need to accomplish your goals.
  • Be grateful always. Gratitude is one of the most powerful positive vibrations.  Take time daily to acknowledge what you are thankful for.

    When you focus on the blessings, you will find there are more things you are blessed with.

  • Engage in a morning practice to recharge. Spend time every morning thinking about your perfect day, visualizing what you’d like to create… acknowledging what you are grateful for, releasing negative charges that have occurred, and centering yourself in joy and love.

    When you are grounded, your day will flow with much more ease.  With a full heart and mind, you’ll have the inner strength you need to move mountains.

You are stronger than you know, more capable than you can imagine. Believe in your dreams and know that you have everything inside you need to make it happen.

Once you get clear about what you want and own that it’s possible you’ll discover it is much easier to get what you want by taking control of your thoughts, your visualizations, and your actions!

How To Stop Wasting Time and Money on Business Programs

Time to Get Clear

As entrepreneurs, we constantly try to learn more about business and marketing so we can advance our businesses. However, many people get sidetracked by trainings and programs that send them down the rabbit hole of busy work and end up wasting their precious time, money and energy on knowledge and information that are not aligned with their vision and passion.

In the first couple of years in my business, I spent thousands and thousands of dollars on trainings and programs.

A few out of genuine passion for learning and growth, but many out of FEAR … fear of not knowing enough, fear of missing out (triggered by some scarcity tactic or caught in the comparison trap), fear of not doing the “right” things and therefore being criticized or judged… etc.

I was looking for some “$297 magic bullet” outside of me for clarity. I was thinking if I had a “tried-and-true” blueprint I could numb out with the “doing” – make myself feel good about checking things off the list – and thereby spare myself from the “soul-searching” hard work that ultimately creates the foundation for a fulfilling business.

I was rushing ahead without knowing where I was going.

Finally I put myself on a “program diet.” I dug through my hard drive and found $6,591 worth of training materials I had not been able to deploy meaningfully and successfully – in fact they might have done more harm than good

  • Some of them added a bunch of ideas to the “stuff I know” compartment in my brain but got me frozen in information overload.
  • Some sent me down the path of doing a load of busy work that ultimately, detoured me from my big vision.
  • Some left me with folders full of half-done assignments that added to the confusion and analysis paralysis.
  • Some even drove me into the comparison trap, getting me to wonder what was wrong with me because I didn’t get the results “as advertised.”

I felt like a faceless number being spat out from the other end of the “guru” factory line, regurgitating the same stuff just like everyone else.

Until I stopped, and returned to the core of my business – ME! The clarity about how I want to express who I am – my vision, passion, value and superpowers – through my business.

I am not alone – I have worked with many coaches, consultants and service professionals who have taken those $1,997 or $3,497 programs, sitting on a load of other $297 or $497 trainings, and still struggle.

Don’t get me wrong, most trainings and programs deliver a lot of value, and I am all for constantly acquiring new skills and knowledge. However, based on my experience talking to those who have gone through those programs, I found that a couple of things are often overlooked:

  1. Clarity and Solid Foundation
     
    These folks cannot give me a confident answer to the foundational questions I make sure all my private clients can confidently answer so they have a solid foundation for their businesses.
     
    They don’t have clarity they need to design a business that reflects their passion, vision and superpowers. They haven’t built a rock solid platform so they know how to articulate “what they do and how they do it” in a way that allows them to sell their products and programs confidently.
     
    Often, the pace and wide range of topics covered by these programs make it easy for us to gloss over certain things we are not willing to dig in and look at – the very things that would trigger fears and discomfort in us, yet the breakthrough will take us where we truly want to go.
  2. Where’s the Money?
     
    Many of these folks don’t have a unique offering that reflects the needs of their ideal clients and their passion, expertise and superpowers.
     
    Why? Because they have not dug deep enough in a way that translates what they know and who they ARE into business strategies and marketing communication.
     
    Because they were not guided to do the mindset work so they can step up and claim their superpowers and uniqueness.
     
    Just writing down your passion, vision, or superpowers on paper is not enough. You can journal till you turn blue, but nothing happens if you don’t have something you can sell and have the confidence to sell it!
     
    Moreover, many people get sucked into chasing after the marketing bright shiny objects,  yet forget to think about where the marketing leads to! If the product or service at the end of the “narrative” does not speak to the potential clients, all the time and money put into marketing is for naught.
     
    Plus, like it or not, many training programs (intentionally or not) foster a certain level of conformity, instead of helping participants step up and be unapologetically unique.
     
    Just taking someone’s 1-/3-/6-month program or some webpage templates and plop it into your website may work for a while, but eventually it will flop because it doesn’t reflect your value, passion and superpowers.
     
    Your superpowers are what make YOU special. Claiming it helps you stand out, make competition a non-issue and command a premium pricing.

It doesn’t mean we don’t invest in any program or training. It just means we need to find the clarity to help us discern what is right for us, so we can build a solid foundation for a profitable, sustainable and fulfilling business.

This level of Ultra-CLARITY is where your big bucks lie.

Getting to this level of clarity takes time, effort, and courage. Not because you have to slave over a task for hours on end, but because you have to face all parts of you – the good, the bad and the ugly.

You can no longer numb out with busy work. You can no longer hide behind templates, checklist or blueprints.

Entrepreneurial endeavor does not come in a box. We have to put in the work, dig into ourselves so our business is an expression of our personality, value and vision.
