No magic pill, wand or formula was applied in creating this success story.

While Social Media can have many benefits to business growth, there’s an underlying, negative-based energy many people experience that could very well be contributing to the lack of their business growth.

And that energy is jealousy…

For us on the West Coast of Canada, we only get to enjoy a few months of summer warmth and sun each year. This is the time we make plans to get out and enjoy the weather as much as possible.

So it stands to reason many of the posts shared on Social Media are fun-related. After all, who wants to share posts about the hours they spend behind their computer working 15 hours a day?

Relaxing at Kingfisher SpaWhile away on holidays recently, it occurred to me there may be some who would look upon my holiday-infused Facebook posts thinking this is my life – doing nothing but having fun and going on holidays.

And when I thought about it, I’ve given them no reason to think otherwise. If a new Facebook business-owner “friend” only saw holiday-related posts, then that’s the impression they would have of me – I never seem to work!

For those that know me, this assumption is far from the truth but nonetheless, for those that don’t, I can see how they would come to that conclusion.

And the interesting thing is, that kind of conclusion has a far-reaching result that could very well be affecting their business success.

That’s because instead of being happy for me, they are feeling a twinge of jealousy.

Jealous they can’t take holidays…
Jealous they can’t go for spa treatments…
Jealous they can’t relax poolside at a resort…

And so on.

How many times have you looked at someone’s success or witnessed all of the wonderful travels they’ve been on and secretly wished it were you instead of them?

When this happens we nosedive into a lack and scarcity mindset. Our ego kicks into high gear and we get into competition mode. Comparing what WE DON’T have to what THEY DO have.

And when that happens, we’re not in an expansive, abundant state of mind. Instead, we’re stifling all energies needed for growth, which can ultimately result in a lack of success.

I did it too. I would see people like Mari Smith travel the world doing keynote speeches or private consulting gigs and think how lucky she is to live such a magical life!

But then I realized magic has absolutely nothing to do with it!

When we see people like Mari, or me for that matter, reaping the rewards of our labour, we fail to realize the labour part of that equation.

The ability to take time off, travel, go to spa appointments or relax at resorts is a product of hard work. It didn’t all happen magically, or effortlessly for that matter.

What does gratitude have to do with success?

I’ve talked before about my keys to success and aside from working long hours, having a team and building a business wisely, the biggest key to my success is gratitude.

I’m thankful every single day even if a client is upset with me.  Gratitude can still be found in the lessons learned to avoid that incident from happening again.

I’m thankful for the hard-working, integral employee giving their notice.  Gratitude can still be found because I was able to have them on my team as long as I did and look forward to how that person’s replacement will make a positive impact on my business.

I’m thankful for the deadbeat, non-paying client.  Gratitude can still be found knowing what kind of client to turn down in the future, seeing the signs ahead of time they will be a challenge to collect from.

This is what I do every day where it’s well documented in my gratitude journal I write in every night.

Success is what you want it to be. You are in control.

Despite the one-sided impression Social Media provides, there is no magic program, product or formula that will create success for you.

But with having an attitude of gratitude, a strong commitment to success and not letting jealously prevent you from thinking you can have that too, you can be successful.

I’ll let you in on a little secret…. many don’t know that not long ago Daniel and I were quite destitute. We were on the verge of losing our home and had a $24,000 credit card debt (due to identity theft but that’s another story). So I know what it feels like to be on the other side of the pasture thinking everything was so green over there and completely unattainable.

However, what got us through to the other side is we never gave in to victimhood. We believed things will get better, focused on being grateful for what we had, and worked towards what we did want.

Law of attraction expert Dana Smithers has a great solution to when things are not going perfect and that’s to ask yourself, “what do I really want?” (Watch this quick video where she explains how this works.)

So the next time you feel a pang of jealousy when you see someone post about their wonderful cruise, their world-wide adventure or their spa treatment, remember there was no magic involved in that person’s success.

Only hard work, commitment and a whole lot of gratitude for hills and valleys that was overcome along the way to that success.

I have shared with you the seasonal rhythms of nature throughout this year to help you be more successful in all you do, personally and professionally.

Aligning yourself with the available energies around you can make things a whole lot easier. Processes can become more natural and true to what is right for you.

As we celebrate summer solstice, we enter into a season of high energy for growth and expansion. Ideally, it is a great time to tap into that energy by promoting and connecting with your ideal client so that both of you can grow and expand.

But it is more important to have done a few things before you are ready:

  1. Site Preparation – as a farmer and arborist, I learned long ago that the most important thing to do is make sure the soil is the best growing medium possible to sustain the plants.
    The soil is your business foundation. It must contain the right nutrients and be easy to turn so the young roots of your offerings and clients can prosper. The more time you spend preparing the soil for optimal growth, the easier for your prospects to take root.
  2. Fertile Seeds – Selecting the right seeds to plant is also critical. There are so many different kinds of systems and approaches out there to choose from. Make sure you pick the best ones for not only your desired outcome, but meet your ability to cultivate them successfully for this growing season.
    Same thing goes for the clients that you decide to work with. Are they appropriate for the growing conditions you have to offer? Will you be able to nurture them so they achieve optimal growth under your care?
  3. Weeding and Watering – When the seeds sprout and shoots take off, it’s time for your full attention to cultivate their growth. Regular watering is required along with effort to keep the growing space free of unwanted plants that can compete with what you want to nurture.
    Once they are big enough, they can outcompete most anything and will grow and flourish.

Once these strategies are in employed, you are able to thrive with your offerings and networking in the height of the season’s energy. This success will produce a bountiful harvest you can enjoy for a long time.

In the Northern Hemisphere, today (September 22nd) is the Autumnal Equinox, the official start of the fall season.

There are many signs this time of year that we are moving into a season with different energies…the temperatures are cool, days are getting shorter, leaves are starting to turn color.

As you reflect on these shifting energies, there is much to learn from nature that can help you achieve greater success in your business.

Here are 3 of these ways:

  1. Balance between work and play.
    The word “equinox” means when the night (nox) equals the day. And indeed, at equinox we mark the time the earth is positioned around the sun during its annual orbit in which the daylight is equal to the night’s dark.
    This is a perfect time to remind ourselves the importance of having a healthy balance between work and the rest of our lives.
    When you can make sure you give energy and attention to not only family and friends but leisure activities, the quality of your work will undoubtedly improve. You can become more efficient and able to focus better on tasks.
  2. Get rid of what no longer serves you and your business.
    The Fall is the time that plants start to go dormant for the winter. They shed leaves, flowers, and fruit because these parts have served their purpose in the sunny, productive days of summer.
    This important part of nature’s cycle points to an essential task that we must do at least once a year – cull what is no longer working for us.
    Take time to examine your office, files, and even business systems and ask, “What is still relevant and useful?” “Is this [item] actually getting in the way of us being productive in my work?”
    Consider it “Fall cleaning” and know it will give you the clarity and space you need to excel.
  3. Celebrate your accomplishments, both personal and professional.
    They call the full moon nearest to the fall equinox the Harvest Moon. This is the time of year when the bounty from the land is at its peak, and we love to celebrate the harvest (think the Thanksgiving holidays).
    What a perfect time to reflect on the year’s successes (so far) and celebrate your prosperity. Melody Beattie wrote, “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more.”
    Expressing gratitude will only attract more abundance for you and your business.

These “lessons” are simple, once you understand they are a part of a natural process – and they really work.
Take a walk in a turning forest or visit a local farm to witness these powerful messages, and then find ways to reflect them in your business – and your life.

Awareness in life is a very important concept.

Awareness in business is critical to success.

As I observe situations and people, I realize that there are those who have awake and alert perceptions and those who just plod along, unaware of the challenges that their environment presents.

Acuity of mind is part being settled in an understanding of where you are and how your actions, or business relates to others. if you open an enterprise blind to the challenges, you may succeed, if luck goes your way, or your qualities are such that no-one can stop you.

For the rest of us, our business success will depend on understanding how our product or service fits into the marketplace and what challenges there are to present them to the buying public. 

Awareness of the circumstances and situations that surround you gives you the information to make appropriate decisions that are logically or intuitively intended to enhance your commercial opportunities.

Those who are aware will be more in tune to their intuition.

These are the “gut feelings’ that we have are really based on information we receive. We just process it differently than long analytical inquiries. We also need to process this information against all the alternatives and decide whether our intuitive or longer-term analysis provides us with the best answer.

Therefore, awareness is information.

With information you can ask others their opinion or decide yourself. The main advantage of, “vision of information” is that you have all the right ingredients to assist you in deciding how to grow, when to expand, when to retrench or when to leave your business as is.

It will help you decide which of your ideas have legs and are valid and which should be put on hold.

Situational awareness will help in so many other ways as we tweak our business models. Seeing what you competition is doing, what new upstarts are planning, and what mistakes are made by those who are losing business will assist you in making the right business and marketing decisions.

Information is powerful so don’t ignore it! Be aware.

It’s so easy to get distracted while in pursuit of an important goal

It seems that while every step ahead may get you closer to your destination, it also presents you with turning points, junctures, and new paths of “opportunity” (which are often distractions in disguise).

Therefore, if you don’t keep your goals in the forefront of your mind and take discernable steps towards them, then invariably something shiny and alluring will knock you off track.

To eliminate the ‘shiny object’ syndrome, try these 6 laser-focused strategies to keep moving in the right direction:

  1. Know what you are really passionate about

    Know who you are at your very basic core. Until you know your authentic self, it’s impossible to know what really drives you. And if you don’t know what drives you, you can’t expect to get where you want to go. If you focus on living your life in a way that fills your heart and allows you to fulfil your true purpose, then the rest will fall into place.

  2. Take time to plan before you set your goals

    If you just jump in and start writing goals without seeing the “Big Picture” or even knowing where you want to go or what you want to accomplish – you can’t seriously expect to end up where you truly want to be at the end. And if you don’t know have a plan addressing the risks and rewards, there’s not much incentive to work do the work.

  3. Write down your goals

    We all have heard this…but many of us just don’t do it. Studies show that by writing your goals down, your chances of success increase exponentially. Putting your goals in writing makes them tangible and reminds you of what you are working toward. Double-check to assure that they are “SMART” goals as described below.

  1. Align your daily choices with your goals

    Every day, decide what ONE BIG thing and two smaller things you are going to accomplish that day that will help you to move toward your chosen destination. Accomplish the ONE BIG action step first.

  2. Share your goals with someone you trust

    Create accountability with those closest to you by simply sharing your goals, so when you start to veer off track, they can help you through. Give them permission to be as firm as you feel you need them to be to insure you stay on track.

  3. Set milestones of success

    Nothing is more frustrating than feeling like you are not making enough progress towards accomplishing a big goal. Set milestones of success where you can stop, celebrate and reward yourself for your accomplishments. But don’t sit for too long – get started again soon to keep up your momentum. Express gratitude for what you have accomplished!

Every day, everything that you do is either moving you toward or away from your goals.

Don’t let temptations, frustrations or the feeling of immediate gratification keep you from achieving what matters most. Keeping your goals top of mind will allow you to make the decisions that bring you the happiness and joy that will last a lifetime.

Do you remind yourself about the law of attraction when you attract good things in your life?

And when ‘bad’ things come your way are you convinced that had to do with someone else and not you?

If you think this way you are not alone.

Many entrepreneurs love to celebrate all the awesome abundance that comes into their life whether it’s money, fabulous clients, better relationships, travel, great career, sunny skies, etc. they might even say things like “I am an attraction magnet!” and be speaking law of attraction talk.

But often when something negative comes into their life they are confused why they attracted it and probably don’t give another thought to the role the law of attraction is playing in their life.

Did you know that you actually have a ‘Set Point’ for the Law of Attraction?

What I mean by this is that in your mind-body connection you have a control system. Your thoughts emit certain feelings and it’s from those feelings that you manifest.

Law of Attraction Set PointYou can set your Law of Attraction control valve Set Point to ‘ON’ by being aware of every thought you are thinking or saying. Law of Attraction just responds to it by matching the vibration whether it’s positive or negative.

So naturally if your control valve is turned ‘OFF’ you are not doing any ‘deliberate’ attracting.

You also might be someone who flips back and forth with your Law of Attraction control valve so you haven’t really established the ‘norm’ set point for yourself.

With a little more attention to using the Law of Attraction deliberately and mindfully you can change this. You can be a deliberate attractor 100% of the time!

Positive thinking plays a role in the Law of Attraction but a positive thought on its own won’t manifest what you want unless you believe it to be true. When you believe it to be true you will also feel positive – ‘feelings’ being more important than words here. And you will have set your SET POINT to ON!

Here’s a short definition for the Law of Attraction:

I attract to my life whatever I give my attention, energy
or focus to whether positive or negative.

The Law of Attraction is operating 24/7 365 days a year just like other universal laws.

To see how well you are manifesting more of what you want and less of what you don’t want, look for ‘evidence’ in your life. Where you are aware of you using the Law of Attraction deliberately? Continue to look at the results you are getting in your life.

5 Ways to Set Your Law of Attraction Set Point:

  1. Think about what you want to manifest in your day before you get out of bed. This is similar to setting your intention or running the movie.
  2. Throughout your day notice what you are attracting. If you find you dislike what you are attracting then deliberately focus on something positive that makes you feel good.
  3. When you are thinking negative thoughts i.e. you’ve got the 3 ring monkey circus going on – then remember to RESET your VIBE. Ask yourself “So what do I want?”
  4. Observe the ‘Evidence’ that you are deliberately using the Law of Attraction. What are the results in your business? Do you love your clients?
  5. Be ‘Accountable’ for what you are attracting in your life. If you are fed up with how your business is going or your ideal clients just aren’t ‘ideal’ then you need to change that. You change that by resetting your Set Point to be more positive and focus on what you want.

So I invite you to think about your ‘Law of Attraction Set Point’. Where is yours? Do you turn the control valve off sometimes and don’t even realize you’ve done that?

When you realize that things just keep happening to you and you don’t like them then reset your Set Point control valve to where you want it to be!

Become a Master of Time Management by Protecting Your Time Like a Tiger!

Every Entrepreneur needs to set aside time for reading, researching and professional development. It is part of the job to stay on top of things or get left behind!

Many of our work days get chewed up with issues that are not productive or even on the to-do list! Does your day get filled with distractions and problems to solve? Does your Professional Development/Progress get put on the back burner all the time?

Many entrepreneurs, while driven to think about business 24/7, seem to allow for distractions and interruptions. Whether you work out of your home or in a small office, each day can be a challenge to fit everything in.

Amy Porterfield, former assistant to Tony Robbins, used the term ‘Tiger Time’ in one of her blogs recently, and I’ll expand on this term. It is time to take control of our precious time!

Time to think like a tiger!

Set aside the TIME YOU NEED and be


Poor time management can be the root of many of our issues with productivity, procrastination, disorganization, and more. In feng shui we encourage a clean desk, organized files, specific colours and visuals to reap motivational energy. But, business people also need to plan to maintain the core foundation of the business. And, that takes time.

If you are a true entrepreneur with a cause and a passion, you’ll need to continue your own self development in order to stay on top of changing apps, new rules or codes, breaking news etc, ~ in order to be a front-runner in your business.

In many cases, you can do this right from your own computer! It is so easy to connect; be informed through webinars, on –line courses, look for reference materials and more. You’ll also need to monitor the competition.

To fit all this in, you‘ll need to be more protective of your time:

  1. Identify which time of day will be your ‘working window’. This is defined as the best time for productivity to connect with others: book appointments, follow-up, marketing, post things related to your business. This should be something already revolving around your client profile.
  2. Block off your ‘tiger time’ away from this ‘working window’. This time is for YOU and business development! Perhaps you already do this with tasks/chores such as making dinner, or going to the gym, but your business foundation also needs attention on a weekly or daily basis.
  3. Reinforce the significance of this time. Close the door, turn off your phone, and clear the desk. (Feng Shui logic: A clear desk promotes an invitation for fresh ideas to land.)

Whether you are writing a blog, trying to finish a course or listening to a replay of a related topic, you need to protect your time. The need for self-business development is as important as a sacred or spiritual practice to keep you grounded and thinking positive.

If scheduling an hour to listen to a recording or think creatively seems impossible, before giving up on it, remember that the outcome could be you missing that next step up in your business.

Be firm and be protective of this time or, it will get eaten up. No phone calls, no interviews, no assistants, kids or laundry.

Decide what is important for you, carve out the time and get to it! If you have to, pull out the claws and declare ‘no interruptions’!

In my life as a communications and public relations specialist, I have spent my career being asked: “Can you make us a brochure?” Nowadays that’s often been shifted to: “Can you help me promote myself?”

And always, I smile, nod, and say: “Yes, of course I can do that.” What do you want people to know about you?”

And that’s where people get stuck.

“Ummm, well, that they should hire me/buy from me/know about me, of course!” they say.

Then the conversation goes something like this:
“Ok, why should they hire you?” I ask?

My potential client is inevitably taken aback. Isn’t it obvious why people should hire them/buy from them/know about them?

Well, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but IT’S NOT OBVIOUS. People don’t know about you.

They’re not forming a line outside your front door. And even if they do know about you, they don’t necessarily know what you can do for them and why they should hire you.

Even the smallest businesses need a vision, a mission and a series of key messages so you’re ready to tell people who you are, what you do and why you’re awesome.

What is it you’re up to in the world?
What role does your business play in making that vision a reality?
And what are the three key things you want people to know about you and your business?

And always remember your Call to Action. Now that they know about you, what do you want them to do with the information?

This is also very important.

So let’s get started: You have a business, you are up to big, big things. All you need are a few clients and you’ll be rockin’ it. Ask yourself this question: If you (or your business) could wish anything for the world, what would it be?

Let’s start with your Vision. This is big. This is what you/your business wants most for the world.

As an example, Starbucks Vision is: To inspire and nurture the human spirit. Many of you may be surprised by this. Starbucks is nurturing the human spirit? That’s big isn’t it? Bigger than a cup of coffee, that’s for sure.

Moving along to your Mission: This is the role you/your business plays in achieving your mission. As an example, again from Starbucks, their Mission is: To inspire and nurture the human spirit, one person, one cup and one neighbourhood at a time.

Being clear about the role of your business in achieving your vision is very important. Starbucks is selling coffee, and an experience, that you will likely feel good about. In fact, your spirit may even feel a little nurtured while you are taking that break in your day.

Breaking it down even further, if there were three key things you wanted people to know about you/your business, what would they be?

These are your three Key Messages.

I haven’t asked Starbucks, but if I were to go in and ask them what their three key messages were, they might say something like:

  1. We serve great coffee
  2. This is where you can go to relax and take a break in your day
  3. You will feel good after you buy a coffee from us

Further to that, there will be many, many supporting reasons why each of those three key messages are important and multiple marketing campaigns can be created to support the many sub-messages.

But it’s important to start with your top three things you want people to know about you/your business.

What are yours? Write them below so we can all see why we should hire you/buy from you/know about you.

After that, you are well on your way to being able to start writing that brochure/web page you’ve been struggling with. AND, best of all, people will know why you are awesome, and are more likely to buy from you as a result.
