Making the Most of Facebook Live for Your Business

5 Steps to Getting Great Results with Your Live Broadcasts

Facebook Live is a free streaming tool you can use to boost your business. But before you dive in there are some key factors to take into consideration to avoid risking losing your credibility.

Facebook Live is an excellent way to get the engagement Facebook wants on your Business Page with their latest algorithm updates. As long as you’re prepared, you will garner a great reach and higher views than natively uploaded videos.

Just remember, when your Live, you are LIVE!

Are You Making the Best Impression for your Facebook Followers? Read Our Post: 5 Ways to be a Positive Influence on Facebook

With Facebook Live all you need is a 4G or better Internet connection, a Facebook profile for yourself or your business page, and you can take advantage of up to 4 hours of free live streaming.

Getting these set up isn’t hard but with the volume of new live streams happening per hour you’ll need to work on your videos in order to draw in users.

Keep reading to find out what you need in order to draw your followers in when you’re doing your next live broadcast.

Step 1: Get the Word Out

Facebook live alerts your followers about your live stream but only after it’s been launched. Unless you catch them when they’re free you are then relying on your timing being just right for people to join you during the live broadcast.

In order to make sure your followers know beforehand it’s important to put up posts announcing the coming live event. But there is more you can do.

>Sendcalendar is a service that lets you build out your live schedule, which you can then share with your followers. Providing you know your schedule before you simply set up your dates and the system creates everything you need to share your calendar in an email, on your website or blog, or in a social media post.

Once a user subscribes they receive a notification of the upcoming stream well in advance, so they can plan to attend. It’s easy to use and seamlessly updates whatever calendar your follower is normally using.

You can also schedule your live stream right in the Facebook live admin area; however, you need to use a 3rd party Livestream software such as eCamm (for Mac’s) or BeLive.tv (for PC’s) or other similar services for that to work.

Step 2: Know Your Video

How you broadcast is as important as what you talk about during that broadcast.

Do you have a home studio set up? Are you going to be broadcasting via your phone, iPad or computer?

If you have a studio, that’s great but understandably not everyone does. Having a dedicated studio space helps you be organized and literally “stage” your set so it’s free from background clutter and noise, giving you optimal control over the video’s environment.

Susan Friesen video studioHere’s a shot of my studio, which is continually being modified and tweaked for optimal settings.

And here’s a couple of pro tips on shooting professional-looking social media videos to review that covers lighting and audio pointers.

Now if you’re jumping into a live broadcast via your phone or iPad, take the end product into consideration. Make sure you test out everything beforehand.

Several times, I’ve been caught with bad audio or lighting, assuming all is ok but found out afterwards they were way off!

So ensure you don’t encounter slow Internet signals, distracting background noises, or any other problems beyond your control. We’ll cover more on this in step 4.

Step 3: Make Your Facebook Live Stream Purpose Clear

Your video description is very important. When you write the description before going live, be very clear about the topic and what will be discussed/shown. Always think in terms of benefits – why would your followers want to jump on? What’s in it for them?

This is your chance to grab potential viewers reviewing the announced live stream so take your time and keep it concise, clear and catchy! If you aren’t clear on why they should join you, they will simply ignore you.

Step 4: Prepare for Your Facebook Live Stream

When you are live, you are live! Viewers who clear their calendar to attend your video won’t stay long if you’re not ready to go when the camera rolls.

Treat this aspect seriously because it’s a make-it or break-it moment of your live stream. Imagine a newscast where the feed is delayed, and the anchor sits hanging asking for patience while the situation is resolved. This key moment could not only lose the viewer this time, but also for all future videos.

Have a script prepared with short form notes and keep them handy as a guide for yourself. I often use sticky notes attached near the lens of the camera to keep me on track with the pointers I want to not forget.

If you have a tablet handy you can even use it as a teleprompter with your subject, notes, or script in large fonts. Promptsmart is an app you can use as well but we’ll save the more advanced broadcast techniques for another time!

Step 5: Review and Revise

Your video may have been great but not started at the best time for the biggest viewership or it may have reached more people than you think!

It’s important to pay attention to the Facebook metrics available and use that as feedback for your future live broadcasts.

Head to the Facebook page you broadcast from and click on Insights. From there click on Videos and then select which video’s stats you want to review.

If you want to check individual video metrics, select Insights then Advanced and then select Recorded Live. You can pick your video from there and really dig into the analytics of who viewed and when.

But just a caution, don’t fret when you see a lot of 10-second views. Sometimes people get bumped off of your broadcast due to their own limited bandwidth and then jump right back on again. So do look at the stats to give you an overview of your broadcast performance but don’t take the numbers too literally. There are lots of variables out of your control that make up those numbers.

Peak Live Viewers is a good piece of information to look at. This will show you when your stream was most viewed and if you see a big spike then consider that time a good start time for your next video.

Remember this isn’t about your schedule so much as your followers. When you plan your next live stream start at the peak time!

5 Ways to be a Positive Influence on Facebook

Do you want your Facebook followers to know, like and trust you? Are you wanting your social media efforts to result in more clients and sales?

One way to ensure both of those things is to consciously create a positive influence when you post on Facebook.

This eTip provides 5 critical things to be aware of when you create a presence on Facebook that will have a big impact on your influence with your followers.

Whether it’s your personal profile or your business page, you never know who is on the receiving end who is making a judgement about you – should they like you? Should they trust you? Should they get to know you more?

Personal branding plays a big role in social media, whether you like it or not It takes 5 seconds for someone to form an opinion of you – whether positive, negative or indifferent Everything you say, do, write and be on social media are all making an impression on someone else.

Here’s the 5 ways you can make a more positive influence with your followers on Facebook:

  1. Use a Professional Profile Photo

Ensure your personal and professional profiles have a professional photo of you and not of you sunbathing on the beach or taking a selfie at a restaurant.

Your photo can be more casual on your personal profile but make it more professional on your page.

  2. Be Aware of What You Post

When it comes to making a positive influence on others, it’s not just how you look but also what you post that will make a difference. Who you are has a direct impact on others so ask yourself about your posting style:

    • Is this positive or negative? I highly recommend you stay on the positive and don’t bash someone or something else just to make your point.  Also know your facts before speaking against someone or something. There are always two sides to the story. You can still state your concerns but do it from a factual, non-biased opinion as opposed to rant and rave.
    • Am I being supportive or bashing and critical?
    • Am I complaining or providing solutions?
    • Is this post contributing to the fear mentality or am I being the voice of reason?
    • Is it judging or accepting?

And if you tend to post a lot of political-related or debate-fueled posts and you are passionate about them, be passionate but do so knowing you are not going to please everyone and you have to be ok with that. Be confident in what you stand for and don’t be afraid to have a voice.

  3. Embody a Positive Communication Style

Your communication style can have a huge and direct impact on not only the people you communicate with, but also on your influence with them.

Here’s some pointers to keep in mind when you are engaging with others on Facebook:

    • Be helpful
      • Seek out opportunities where you can share your knowledge and wisdom within your areas of expertise.
      • Don’t promote. Simply be of service and share what you know in a helpful manner.
    • Show your support of others
      • Like, comment and share your follower’s posts.
      • Congratulate people of their successes.
      • Encourage your followers when they need it.
      • Refer others to those who are seeking help in areas you can’t help. Your goodwill will not go un-noticed.
  4. Choose Like-Minded Friends

With so many fake profiles and scam artists lurking on Facebook these days, it’s always a good idea to vet that person before accepting their friend request.  Only follow back those that are in alignment with your values and integrity.

Reach out to other like-minded people that share a common interest, philosophy or ideology as you.

  5. It’s Not All About You

Remember why Social Media exists in the first place. It’s NOT to make money and sell our wares. It’s to be social and build friendships and positive relationships with others.

So show your gratitude, appreciation, understanding and compassion for other people when on Facebook. This approach will have a much more positive impact on how people perceive you and your business.

The more you focus on others, the more you will gain the “know, like and trust” factor with them, which will ultimately lead to more business success through leads, sales and referrals.

3 Tips to Being More Conscious to Manifest Business Success

Being More Conscious to Manifest Business Success

As a leader of our business we make decisions daily and our actions determine the outcome of our reality.

Of course, we all want to be successful and be fulfilled whilst creatively expanding our business. However, subtle unknown beliefs will directly contribute to our emotional stability and resilience and ultimately affect our enjoyment and what we do.

For example, a teacher/student experience in our childhood may have left us with a healthy attitude towards failure. Alternatively, an unhealthy one where we could be scared to fail and do not even know it.

Making Conscious Choices

Tip One
If you cannot jump easily into the unknown, and have a tendency to want facts, details and controls before you decide, this behaviour is alerting you to an underlying FEAR.

If we are anxious about a choice, we will not recognise the smart ways that our mind will prevent us from taking expansive risks that could benefit our growth.

The mind may give you calculative and logical reasons why you should remain closed to an idea when in fact, it may have been the exact door you should have walked through.

Being Conscious About Fear

Tip Two
If you feel a fear, transform it from the body, and expand into heightened consciousness and turn it into empowerment and strength you feel throughout your body.

So the next piece of advice we are often given is to “feel the fear and do it anyways” ….

This moves me to the missed opportunity in this second piece of advice. If you have not yet transformed the fear you were experiencing and jumped in, that fear is still in your body. And as in the law of attraction, like draws like, so it will automatically lead to consequences that will bring the same fear up again for you.

The quality of your life will not move into greater comfort or joy, but instead the underlying fear will win.

There is a possibility that if you “felt the fear and did it anyways” you might find that exact decision will be unsuccessful too. (simply because why should life send you a gift if you have not yet transformed what needs to be seen?)

This is why being honest with yourself is so important and that your intelligence guides you to what is working for you and what is an illusion.

Many people are beginning to do the above exercise through engaging their mind, through reframing or attempting to put a spin that gives them a broader and more open, comfortable perspective.

The mind is thus adjusted to think differently from its original thought- and you sort of step in to assist the first thought. Neuro science tells us that a better quality of thought aids the connection of greater circuitry in our brains.

This is all great news but again an opportunity of ease in our life is being missed.  If we had used consciousness to transform the fear in the first place, it is gone forever, and the associated negative and undermining thoughts are also gone forever.

No more need to intervene to assist the mind in future because the energy has transmuted into its opposite form of inner strength. Thus, you get to experience a deeper peace within and ultimate fulfillment becomes easier to access as your own innate confidence rises to the surface.

Embracing Your Consciousness

Tip Three
Take the courage to dive in and heighten your consciousness since the only one who gains is you!

There is no greater joy than to be connected with your own pure presence within and the consciousness that helps to facilitate this also effortlessly brings in ideas, people, and experiences that will advance your business too.

Often these doors that open are far bigger than you could have ever imagined with your mind.

Last week, I heard many female leaders discuss their dismay at watching their male counterparts often steal their great ideas in the board room, leaving them frustrated. What they do not realise is that somewhere in their psyche is a fear to speak up and say “You stole my idea” and then bravely face the consequences of a possible lack of approval from counterparts for being honest.

Of course, through heightened consciousness, they would have the backbone to speak up, without fear of consequence and their ability to command respect would happen naturally.

They would not compare their accomplishments with others. They would not compete either. They would just know how to be authentic out of self-respect and their social mask of “being nice” would be transformed.

When you take the steps to become more conscious the expanded consciousness acts like an expanded vision for you. It is like wearing a pair of glasses that lets you see much more.  Not only does much more seem possible, but also you too become more as you embody the increase in inner strength and power that is yours to claim.

Being Consciously Courageous

It is often hard to face our own ego and look to see what it is truly going on, and why our behaviour is the way that it is.

We often inadvertently buy into concepts of “happiness” and “success” as if they are “out there” and we begin to live a life focused on possessing material gains, money and increased societal recognition & reputation.

We thus miss a very important opportunity and that is to truly enhance our confidence, increase our vision, and have balance in all parts of our life.

We lose out on being a contributor and trailblazer that can elevate many business and personal lives.

Through taking the courage to look at our inner state honestly the parts that want to be empowered and loved, AND the parts that are in competition with others, and judging them, we have a chance to be whole inside.

We finally come to a place of real happiness, success and fulfillment.

For with increased consciousness we arrive at the non-judgmental awareness of what is, but we are not fooled by ideas that keep us enslaved in societal norms that are now outdated.

When consciousness is part of your development program as a leader, unprecedented success of immeasurable form follows to keep all parts of your life, health, relationships, and work in harmony.

I hope to see more people take the jump to elevate their consciousness and have this priceless experience of completeness.

Using Facebook Messenger Bots to Boost Your Business

Using Facebook Messenger Bots to Boost Your Business

Facebook Messenger is a free tool for all Facebook users, including businesses, that is accessible through both the website interface and a downloadable Messenger app available for all phone operating systems.

Its purpose is simply for communication, which is very important for any business with a profile.

Many users do some searching before committing to making a purchase and an easy way is to check a Facebook page or profile for further insights.

We’ve touched on this in other posts regarding providing great customer service and how users will use social media as their customer service channel but for many small businesses the usual answer is simply: that’s great to hear but we simply don’t have the time or manpower to monitor Facebook Messenger.

This becomes a problem when one of the metrics users can see is your typical response time to messages. In their minds, they are checking to see how responsive customer service is after making a purchase just in case they have any questions or issues, and if they see the average wait time to a response being 3 days, they’re not likely to buy.

To Read About the Algorithm Changes Happening on Facebook Read Our Post: 2018 Facebook Changes Put Community First

This is what has necessitated Facebook Messenger Bots but it has expanded greatly since.

The Bots now are something you can create yourself for your business. Depending on what you do, this can be as simple as providing support or as complicated as completing a full sales or marketing funnel task your website is typically used for.

Companies who allow online orders through their website can configure a custom bot to handle orders directly through messenger, which saves them from simply pointing the user back towards their website.

If your purpose is to share information through the platform you can create a bot that sends updates on your business to users through Messenger.

Companies like TechCrunch created their own bots users can add and once added, you can ask it questions or simply ask for updates.

It’s designed to act like a tech-savvy friend you can turn to when you have questions, which makes an excellent offering for a business that is known for reporting tech news.

The idea is to take your user’s journey beyond the task of searching and finding.

Bots are not limited to Facebook, but it is the biggest platform for them. Having a Messenger-driven Live Chat option on your website can make a big difference in your conversions and bounce rate.

Your users are more likely to stay when they see some level of interaction and engagement. When it goes well beyond simple canned responses and actually provides a service, you then have something real that can be used to give your business a big boost.

Why direct them back to your website when the purpose of the website can be completed right in the service channel?

To get these Bots set up right you’ll need to do a few things:

  1. Understand your customer’s reasons for interacting with your business
  2. Map that user’s journeys from interest to completion and then create those steps in the bot
  3. Create a voice for each purpose and draft a script that conveys genuinely helpful feedback to the user when prompted.

If they’re looking for support, then make sure your support messages are drafted in a way that isn’t rigid or off putting.

If they’re looking to purchase from you or book something with you then you should have an upbeat tone to the messages generated by the queries that leads the user to completing the transaction right in Messenger.
  4. Test them out yourself and rewrite as necessary. You may find you’ve missed something if you take the user’s position and message your own business.

Try to complete a sale or request help in the form of service and see if you feel satisfied by what the Messenger Bot feeds back to you. If not then it’s time to revamp the bot!

It sounds that easy but it’s actually an evolving and strategic process so don’t treat this as a “set it and forget it” initiative. It’s important to monitor the stats and make adjustments to account for any areas that are not creating a perfect user experience.

If you have users following your business on Facebook just so they can get a hold of you (your bot) then you’re doing something right. You may even see website stats decrease but if those users are simply bypassing the step of using the site and you have better conversions through messenger then you’ve got it!

It is strongly advisable to seek professional help when creating these. Even with third party systems taking care of the code-related steps you will waste more time trying to become a Messenger Bot Expert than you think. And because of the time demand, a professional may likely wind up involved anyway.

Strategy, scripts, and code are important. Your users will see the end product so if you are interested in getting these set up for your business, please get in touch and our team will make sure your business’s bot is set up right.

How to Create Facebook Lists to Build Engagement & Get Leads

Do you use Facebook lists at all? Are you aware of how powerful they can be to build your brand visibility?

This eTip shows you what Facebook lists are, how to create them and why you should avoid going to your main news feed all together from now to help with your social media marketing.

Facebook lists are a great way to categorize all of your Facebook friends. That may sound a little cold but for those of us that have thousands of friends, it’s the perfect solution to ensuring you get engaged with the right people at the right time without having to sift through the thousands of friends collected over the years.

So yes, Facebook profiles also play a significant role in your social media marketing efforts.

While you still want to connect with friends and family, you also want to use your profile to connect with industry influencers, those in your target market, and those that share common interests within your industry with you that can be connected to your business.

For instance, if you’re a weight loss coach, creating lists all to do with the health and wellness industry is a perfect way for you to stay visible with your followers, share your expertise with them, and be the one who can answer their questions related to your field.

You all have a similar interest in health and wellness, fitness, and weight loss so by putting them into a list you have created the means to have a  direct connection with them.

A challenge with the current Facebook algorithm is that it is deciding what you see in your main news feed. And your newsfeed is not in chronological order so does not post the most recent posts first. Instead, Facebook rewards posts that have achieved certain metrics with more prominent placement because they are trying to give you the most important information.

But often that’s not really the case and you wind up missing great posts!

With lists, the list feed will show posts from all those people that you specify to be in that list. It’s all in chronological order and Facebook has no influence on what is posted or when.

Where to locate Facebook lists

From your home page news feed, select Friend lists from the left hand side under the “Explore” option. If you don’t see it select “See More:” to reveal more options.

Where to find friends lists on Facebook

Once you’ve clicked through you’ll see your lists. Some of the lists you see Facebook makes for you and some you will create yourself. If you’ve selected friends who are family then they will go into your Family list.

At the top right find the option to create your own lists. On my Friends list you can see in the image below, at the top I have a list for Influencers.

When I click the list name, you then see all the people on the top right who have been added to the list. This gives you the opportunity to scroll through and engage with these posts.

This helps the people posting and it does so by being engaged with their posts and making a connection with them.

The point of the engagement is not to sell yourself. Your goal is to provide original and valid feedback to one of their posts to demonstrate your own authority on the subject.

If you show expertise and another user reads it, this has the potential to lead the conversation to a direct message with that user, who might ask for your professional help.

You can even Bookmark the Friends list page so when you visit Facebook you skip the main News Feed all together!

How to create a new list and add people to them

Click on Create list as indicated in the image.

From there it’s very easy: name the list and add members!

Once the list is done you then get to see the list in action.

On this page there is an option to add more friends. To add from your friends, type their name into the search box and it will bring up your friends with that name.

If you’d like to select a business page (such as ours) or someone you follow but aren’t friends with click on the top left.

As you add more Facebook friends, you can then add those friends to your lists.

If you’ve used lists already, tell me about your successes or failures so we can all learn together. Let me know all about your experiences in the comments section and if you have any questions about Facebook lists I’d be happy to answer.

2018 Facebook Changes Put Community First

The Low-Down on Facebook’s Latest Changes and How They Affect Your Business

The Low-Down on Facebook’s Latest Changes and How They Affect Your Business

No doubt Facebook has dramatically changed how businesses are marketed online. With over 2 billion users Facebook offers exposure to a powerhouse of potential customers.

That’s why when Mark Zuckerberg announced some big changes in January, it drew many concerns with business owners on how their posts will have a reduced visibility in their follower’s newsfeed.

Here’s what you need to know and do about these changes:

The focus of the new changes is actually very holistic.  Facebook is all about creating community.  These changes are an attempt to help users find relevant content and to have more meaningful social interactions.

2018 Facebook changes force brands to be more holistic in their marketing approachClick To Tweet

In a nutshell that means people want to see information from their family and friends.  They don’t want to be bothered with irrelevant posts from businesses, brands and media.

So how do you deal with Facebook’s algorithm changes as a business?

QUALITY

First of all, you need to focus on quality versus quantity of content.  Relevance takes on a whole new meaning now.  Take time to create really juicy posts your audience can’t resist.

Focus on what your ideal target market wants to receive from you. Will they be entertained? Educated? Inspired? Leave everything else out and only focus on those three things.

ENGAGEMENT

Engagement is everything.  With every post your goal is to stir up a conversation.  Ask for opinions.  Get them to share their advice and stories.

Now more than ever you need to develop a tribe of people who love to be connected and can’t wait to engage with you. Take advantage of Facebook Live being the hottest trend right now that typically generates a lot of engagement.

AUTHENTICITY

Don’t try tricky posts that get people to comment and share on a post.  Using tactics like clickbait and sensationalized fake news or other means to try and trick the algorithms are one of the reasons why these changes occurred.

Moreover, engagement bait tactics can get you in trouble.  The Facebook algorithm can detect such tactics that try to coerce people to engage.

Instead, have the intention of sharing good content from your heart.  Be authentic. Make your posts so amazing that people will naturally want to share them.
