ABC’s of Business – E is for Enthusiasm

Entrepreneur Sleeping at Desk

Do you have a case of the business blahs?

Have you lost your business mojo?

Are words like ‘enthusiasm’, ‘excitement’ and ‘fervour’ a thing of the past?  It can be a challenge for a business owner to keep the fire lit in the belly.

Remember, the antonym of enthusiasm is apathy.

Face it, after an owner has been in business for a few years, it can often be difficult to find passion for the job, once again.

Another scenario which is an enthusiasm killer is when business gets tough. Many owners think about walking away, rather than sticking it out.

If you’re a business owner and finding your enthusiasm dwindling, take a moment to think back to the days when you began your business.

Can you recall the feeling of excitement when you had a day of new projects to look forward to? What about that feeling of everything being so new that even though it was a bit scary, it made you feel happy?

Starting and operating a business is like deciding to take a vacation. There is the excitement in the decision to take a trip, setting the date, picking the destination, the trip planning, deciding who you will travel with, saving up for the trip, and in particular, the build-up of having it to look forward to.

Once you go away, you enjoy it. However, once you come home, all you have are the memories.

It can often feel like a let-down unless you have another trip to look forward to and start the planning.

Your business is similar to trip planning. So why not treat your business like a holiday?

Here are 5 action steps that you can take that will keep your business enthusiasm alive:

  1. Have a 5-year vision in place, (the destination and the date).
  2. Look at it daily and plan your tasks around it. Make sure everything you do, takes you in the direction of the dream.
  3. Share the Vision with your staff, (your travel companions).
  4. Set financial targets, and track the numbers against the vision.
  5. Celebrate success every time!

Remember, human beings need exciting new opportunities to look forward to. Without it, life can become humdrum.

Business is no different. By constantly create new dreams, the enthusiasm for your business will come back naturally.

The Pitfalls of Guerrilla Marketing and Automatically Adding Friends to Facebook Groups

The Downfalls of Gorilla Marketing and Automatically Adding Friends to Facebook Groups

What you need to be aware of when you add friends to your Facebook group without their permission and how it can harm your business reputation

As an entrepreneur, sometimes it’s hard to know who to listen to and trust with marketing advice.

On one hand, you’ve got the Guerrilla Marketers who have the “push” marketing mentality and then on the other hand, the Content Marketers who have the “pull” marketing mentality.

Each have their own specific strategies they use to build a business and many times, these strategies are completely opposite from each other.

No wonder the online marketing world is so confusing!

'Push' marketing or 'pull' marketing - that is the questionClick To Tweet

One strategy I’ve been seeing some Guerrilla Marketers teach (and entrepreneurs implement) is to create Facebook groups and then automatically add all of their friends into them.

These friends did not ask to join the group, instead, they are automatically added into the group whether they have given permission or not. Indeed, there are scripts that people use to do this in bulk.

The reason for this strategy is two-fold:

  • You can create a group and if you have a large friend list, the group can be full of members right off the bat. This makes the group appear to be very popular due to the high number of members.
  • When doing Facebook ads, you can target the members of that group to promote your product or service.

To an “inbound” or “pull” marketer like me, this strategy doesn’t make any sense.

The reason being is that you’re working with a game of numbers – get thousands of people into a group they didn’t purposefully join and hope that some will stick and participate in the discussions and ultimately buy from you.

But the “pull” marketing strategy is completely opposite to this. It’s strategy is to offer valuable content to your ideal target market and the right people who are more apt to purchase from you will naturally be drawn to you and your services.

During this process, you’re developing a “know, like and trust” factor with them. The more someone knows, likes and trust you, the more likely they are to doing business with you or tell their friends about you.

So when you are being torn in different directions on which strategy to implement to help build your business, think about how you want to approach your marketing efforts.

Do you want to push your wares on people through aggressive promotional tactics or do you want to pull people into your business by sharing your expertise?

If you choose the Guerrilla route and implement, as an example, a strategy to create Facebook groups and automatically add your friends to that group without them being aware, then just know that you face a high probability of angering these friends.

How to piss off your Facebook friends: automatically add them to your group without permissionClick To Tweet

I myself have been automatically added to groups many times and it annoys the heck out of me! And I know I’m not the only one.

Do a Google search and see how many times the question is posted, “How do I prevent people from automatically adding me to their Facebook group” and ask yourself if this the best way to promote your business?

Is this how you want your business to be perceived as? Yes, these tactics might just work but to what detriment? They may work short term but if you are in business for the long haul, consider the ramifications of doing such things and how they can harm your business reputation.

Another example is automatically adding people to your newsletter list. But that’s another article!

If you are interested in learning more about “pull” marketing strategies, I invite you to check out my low-cost monthly membership program called Social Blast: eMarketing for Entrepreneurs where each month I cover a topic in social media or online marketing methods that will help you attract your ideal clients in a non-aggressive way.

What do you feel about this subject? Have you ever had someone automatically add you to a Facebook group without your permission? How did you feel about it and what did you do?

Marketing eTip: Stop Adding People Into Your Email List Without Permission

Marketing eTip: Stop Adding People Into Your Email List Without Permission

Today’s eTip is about building your newsletter database… the wrong way.

Sometimes entrepreneurs get over-zealous when it comes to building their newsletter or eZine database. There are two ways that I see happen a lot that are definitely the wrong ways and if you’re doing either of these two practices, it will catch up to you!

The first is exporting your LinkedIn connections and then importing them into your newsletter list.

The second is randomly adding people to your newsletter list who did not opt in. They might be people you met at a networking event and have their business card, or an email address you found on their website or in social media.

Both of these practices are against the law. Period. None of these people gave you expressed permission to be in your bulk newsletter list. Effective July 1, 2014, the Canadian anti-spam law, CASL, came into effect where, no matter where you conduct business from, if you have ANY Canadians on your list, you are in violation of this law.

Stop importing LinkedIn connections and random emails to your list. It's against the lawClick To Tweet

Instead, use tried and true methods of building your list; otherwise, you risk a hefty fine AND having your newsletter provider shut you down.

Click here for more information on the CASL law.

I’d love to hear what you think – have you been adding people to your newsletter list that didn’t give their expressed permission first? Share your response below in the comments section or if you have a question, I’d be happy to answer.

Why ‘Acting As If’ Is Not Working For Your Business Abundance

Superhero Kids

We often hear that if you ‘Act As If’ you have something already you will attract it to you. Every wonder why this works for some people to achieve business abundance and not others?

What does ‘Act As If’ mean?  It means that if you want something, you must act as if you already have it in order to get it.

For example if you want to have an abundant business you must act as if you already have that. If you want to have ideal clients you must act as if you already have them.

Act as if you already have what you want!It might not be working for you for a few reasons:

  1. If you are someone who thinks about what you want but haven’t taken the time to get really clear on what it is you want.

The Law of Attraction cannot give you what you want if you don’t know what it is you want.

  2. If you flip-flop back and forth about believing what you want is possible, the amount of doubt you have will directly effects how much you manifest what you want.

This self-doubt is filled with negative emotions and vibrations.

You need to have a strong clear desire for what you really want AND you need to
remove as much doubt as possible to manifest what you want!

For some people they may feel like a ‘fraud’ trying to be someone they are not. If you feel that way then you need to have a mindset shift because that attitude will never having you ‘act as if’ you had what you wanted.

You can tell yourself that you are ‘in the process of creating the perfect business for yourself with ideal clients’.

You have to feel good about what you are saying or doing to achieve what you want. Without feeling good about yourself you will never manifest something better for yourself.

Here are a few tips to help you get some clarity and remove some of the doubt that you can ‘Act As If’ and manifest your desires:

  • Check out other business entrepreneurs who already have what you want. How do they act? What do they look like? How do they dress? Who do they hang out with?  Start modeling them in a way that feels good to you.

  • Create a ‘Clarity through Contrast‘ worksheet where you make a list of what you don’t want and then a list of what your business will look like AFTER you have what you want.

  • If you like to see a visual, then do a ‘Vision Board‘ with the focus on how you will feel when you have what you want.

  • Write out your story about what will happen when you manifest your desire. Start each sentence with ‘Wouldn’t It Be Nice If…‘ and then write like crazy for at least 60 seconds… you can come back to this at any time.

  • Take some ‘meditation – manifesting time‘ every day so that you start to feel what is possible.

  • Always put what you want out there and let the Law of Attraction bring it to you and remember to be OPEN and say that this would be good OR MORE!

  • If affirmations work for you – great keep using them – but if not, try saying this “I am in the process of attracting my ideal _____” (you fill in the blank).

Start paying attention to the evidence of manifesting coming your way once you start to ‘Act As If’. Go BEYOND what your goal is!

Think even BIGGER THOUGHTS once you see the evidence and remember always to express gratitude for what you are attracting.

Red Flags to Avoid When Outsourcing Your Business Needs

Red Flags to Avoid When Outsourcing your Business Needs. 11 Tips on Hiring the Perfect Dream Team Instead Of Wasting Time, Energy and Money on Duds

11 Tips on Hiring the Perfect Dream Team Instead Of Wasting Time, Energy and Money on Duds

While many entrepreneurs start their business handling everything themselves to get their business going, there comes a point in their business growth when it makes sense to outsource.  Whereas other entrepreneurs decide to get their business off the ground by outsourcing the help they need right away.

My first hire was a programmer and it was the best decision I ever made – by bringing him onto the team, it expanded my offerings to our clients in a big way. It also relieved me of the pressure of having to keep learning more advanced programming in the ever-evolving web development industry.

Having someone on my team who’s expertise was in programming made much better sense and I never stopped there where I now have experts in many fields on my team.

Hiring new team members can take many forms. You can hire someone as an employee, a contractor or a freelancer. Any of these options are a great way to get the help you need without having to hire full time help.

But when you are hiring new people, especially if they are strangers on the Internet, you do need to be careful.

Be careful when hiring new people for your team. Here's some tipsClick To Tweet

Below are some tips to avoid the hidden dangers of hiring new team members to be aware of:

  1. Handling of sensitive data. If you are sharing information such as logins, passwords, and bank information with a new member, not only do you need to be careful in how you share that sensitive information but also in what they do with it.

For example, don’t Skype any kind of sensitive data, it’s not secure.  Even email can be tricky. And require they shred or dispose of that data properly to ensure it doesn’t get compromised on their end.

  2. Have them sign a non-disclose agreement. If you are sharing intellectual property with your team members, it’s important to get a signed agreement that states they agree not to disclose certain information outside of the team circle.

You’d hate to think that your virtual assistant would take your new $5000 program and leak it to your competitor or worse yet, rebrand it and sell themselves.

  3. Get references. It’s important to speak to someone who has experience working with them to find out their work habits, ability to communicate, focus to detail, and turn-around times.

In my experience, it takes a certain personality type to be able to work independently and reliably in a virtual team atmosphere. Not everyone can work efficiently outside of an office space.

  4. Hire someone who is in alignment with your company values. This is especially true if you are looking for an assistant who will be representing your company with the public or your clients.

For instance if you are hiring someone to do social media for you or as a customer service liaison, they are acting as the voice of your company.  You want to be sure they conduct themselves in a professional manner that reflects your own values.

Over the years I have witnessed how terribly bad this can go for clients who have hired assistants who have not represented their company very well.

  5. Avoid payment hassles. If you hire a freelancer from a website and they want you to pay them on the side, that’s a huge red flag that puts their integrity in question.

Also make sure if you hire someone from another country that you can pay them through a safe method such as Pay Pal.  Also be clear on the exchange rate differences between countries and ensure you’re clear which currency you have to pay them in.

  6. Research this person. It’s always a safe practice to do some research on your candidate. Do a Google search and check them out on Social Media. You may uncover some shady dealings or inappropriate behaviours that would make the person a bad hire.
  7. Cheaper is not always better. In fact hiring someone more experienced at a higher rate will often result in higher quality work in a faster time. Think about this hire as a business investment, not a means to get cheap work done or your business could suffer.
  8. Review their portfolio. If the position warrants it, ask for writing or design samples to show the quality of their work. It’s important to know they have the work experience and skills they claim to have. Never assume what they’ve written on their bio or in their resume is 100% accurate.
  9. Try a test project first. Find a small way to first see how the process of working with this person goes. Having a good working relationship with someone is just as important as having someone with the skills to do the job.
  10. Set deadlines. When you work with someone virtually, you are at the mercy of their schedule (unless they are an employee). If they have a deadline on another project or a busy workload, your project may come last.

Make sure the freelancer you work with communicates well on when you can expect completed work.

  11. Check for understanding. Before a resource gets too many hours into a project you want to make sure they have a good grasp on what you want.

Checking on progress from time to time to review that their work is on target can save headaches, upset, and unnecessary fees for redoing work down the road.

By following these guidelines, you can then say “Bye Bye Cheap Freelancers, Hello Dream Team!” because that’s what you end up building – a dream team who is with you in the long-term that will help grow your business.

The Purpose Behind Our Five Biggest Stressors

The Purpose Behind Our Five Biggest Stressors How to Cope When Dealing With the Death of a loved one, Divorce, A Move, A Major Illness, or A Job Loss

How to Cope When Dealing With the Death of a Loved One, Divorce, A Move, A Major Illness, or A Job Loss

As we tread through the maze of living we all face some form of adversity.  For some of us, we are blessed with fewer significant stressors and for others they keep coming one after the other.

In 2004 I faced a major job loss. In 2006, moved to a new country and during 2007 encountered illness. In 2012 and 2014, I watched my husband go through a cancer diagnosis and the associated fear of death and during 2015 we jointly went through the possibility of divorce and asked for legal representation during a divorce in Utah.

The five main stressors that human beings can face, as portrayed on varying health sites, have been experienced in our family life in the last decade in one form or another.

The Purpose Behind Suffering

When under stress, the meaning of life immediately gets questioned as we face devastation that is out of our control.

The purpose behind suffering inevitably has to be questioned if we are curious and perhaps our life is consequently re-evaluated.

Our relationships and our business goes through the swing of strain and strength.

As our volatile emotions of anger, grief and misunderstandings arise our weakest parts are exposed and challenged.

This acts as a platform and an opportunity to find our confidence and strength, the opposite paradigm to our insecurities and weakness.

The Benefits of Contemplation

As we contemplated in our family, a new realization arose for me. If we are blessed with a determined and courageous spirit, we can look for the silver lining in adversity, rather than simply enduring and suppressing our fears.  This is also true as we navigate through the ups and downs of our business success.

For me, becoming weighed down was a gift in disguise. As human beings we are so versatile and capable and this is what gives us dignity.

The School of Life and Its Lessons

We all have patterns that we follow. Some of us have a mind that is driven by fear of survival and our need to earn a living as a key priority.

Others have patterns of embracing insignificance and hiding behind procrastination and neediness.

Some of us may control more than be adventurous and spontaneous.

Whatever our pattern, none of us would really want to miss out on life and stay trapped living an unfulfilled life. That idea alone makes me very sad.

To not experience the lessons we came to see about ourselves, is an opportunity missed.

As death is escapable, we might as well gain something worth keeping in our journey of existence on this planet.

When we uncover our patterns and transform them into greater light we simultaneously become more loving towards everyone, including our clients and team members.

We begin to understand love beyond biological love and that becomes a deeply rewarding lesson. The more we have personally suffered, the more empathetic and caring we become of those around us too, so all our explorations yield great benefits.

The Purpose of Stressors

In my explorations I have come to see that at every opportunity life is encouraging us to trust and surrender to its wisdom.

We are being asked to let go of our control and clinging attitude to our known reality and instead embrace action that helps us to bring light to our shadow personality.

For me finding the extraordinary tool, the Dalian Method, has been the equivalent of finding that one magical needle in a giant haystack of potential solutions.

This genie has offered answers to my deepest questions and aided my journey towards amazing liberation and freedom.

With this tool I have understood why I had suffered. I understood how to come out of suffering irrevocably. I learnt how to embrace life with a renewed optimistic and fearless response. I learnt how to evolve beyond my limiting beliefs and conditionings so that past trauma could be permanently dissolved and not have to be repeated. Traumas may lead to serious injuries, personal injury lawyer | Craig Kelley & Faultless LLC will advice on different injury situations.

Best of all the Dalian Method has made me a better me, a more loving and caring version and thus I now get to enjoy a better quality of life and improved relationships.

What about you? Do you know how to get to the root cause of adversity and quickly eradicate it from your body?

I invite a discussion on how you have handled your stressors in life. What transformation have you experienced? How has it improved your life?

Stop Thinking Your Website is About You

Stop Thinking Your Website is About You

When working with new entrepreneurs, I enjoy being a part of their energy; it’s a very exciting time for them. They are thrilled their vision is coming to fruition with their new logo and branding and of course, their website.

Naturally, they want to tell the world about what they do and have big hopes and dreams for being inundated with daily leads that will keep them joyfully busy.

But then I come along and burst their bubble.

Well, sort of.

While some business owners already have experience and a solid grasp of online marketing, others don’t and sometimes it’s necessary for me to share my wisdom on the finer details of creating an effective website.

Some will gratefully appreciate the advice I provide on how they can best position their business to the world while others feel they have a pretty good handle on the whole process and just want to hand over all their prepared materials. And of course once the site is live, they anticipate sitting back and waiting for the money to roll in.

Now even though this article could be about SEO, it’s actually about something just as important and very related to search engine optimization – and that’s the text or copy that’s on the website.

Your website copy is just as important as SEOClick To Tweet

Once you’ve read through, you’ll understand why website copy is extremely important and what to watch out for when wanting to appeal to your ideal target market.

As a web developer/online marketer, one of the biggest challenges I face is when the client insists on having things done their way. Understandably, they know their business and industry more than I do; however, what they aren’t quite as well versed at is the psychology behind brand positioning and how we come across to our potential clients.

First impressions are the cornerstone to business success.

So what am I getting at here? I’m talking about websites that talk all about the business or individual as if they are writing out an achievement journal. The sentences all start with “I” or “We” (or in 3rd person like “BusinessName is very capable in these areas:”)

And what is the result? A huge turn off to the reader.

Certainly, it’s a natural tendency for us to want to talk about ourselves and our offerings. But unfortunately, the message received by the reader is more like:

“Welcome to my website, I’m so excited you found it. Here’s all about me and my products and services. Please buy, I could use some sales here!”

Now you don’t want your website to have that kind of an impression, do you? How do YOU feel when you encounter websites like that?

Yes, the purpose of your website (usually) is to sell your product or service but how we do the selling is what makes or breaks its success.

Whether your business is B2B (Business to Business) or B2C (Business to Consumer), you are still wanting to capture the interest of a real person. So really your website needs to be written to accommodate P2P (Person to Person).

Regardless if B2B or B2C, your website copy should be P2P: Person to PersonClick To Tweet

Do you enjoy listening to someone go on and on about themselves? Then why would you expect others to come to your website only to hear you go on and on about how great you are?

I hate to break it to you, but no one is interested in YOU or your business until you build up some credibility in their eyes.

What they ARE interested in is to see if what you provide can take care of their needs or solve their problems.

In order to do be able to set the stage for sales that will naturally come once they realize you are the best solution for their problem, you need to develop “know, like and trust” factor with them first.

Show them you understand what they’re going through and what challenges they face.

Paint a picture on the kinds of results they are looking for that demonstrates you know exactly what is happening and that you’re the best solution for them.

So instead of writing phrases like: “MyBusinessName can help you…” or “I am qualified in this area because…” or “We at BusinessName are experts in…”

Write phrases like this: “You need someone who…” or “What you’ll learn is…” or “How would it feel if…”

Notice how all of these phrases are about your ideal client. You’re talking to them, about them. You’re empathising with their challenges and offering a solution.

Now when you take a look at the text that’s on your website, does it do this?

Are you talking TO your ideal client as if this person was standing in front of you? Or are you talking AT them, trying to forcefully convince them to buy?

Aside from the Home, About and Products or Services pages on your website, another way you can demonstrate you understand your ideal client is through blogging and social media.

Use these inbound marketing channels to help your prospective clients learn more about you and your expertise in an organic way.

But do this through sharing your expertise, not your sales pitches.

Sales pitches are a turn-off. People don’t want to be “sold to”, they want to know they can trust you to help them.

This is especially true if your target market is women. Women are all about relationships and feeling trust and safety with the people they work with or purchase from.

So when it comes to writing text for your website, stop thinking it’s about you. It’s not at all about you.

It’s about your ideal client and what they need to hear from you in order to convince them you are the right choice. Once you have that mastered, you’re good as gold!

If writing in a compelling style that will draw in your ideal client and entice them enough to purchase is not your forte, hire a copywriter that will help do that for you. It’ll make a big difference in the success of you website!

Have you taken a close look at your website lately to see how it’s written? When looking at it from this different perspective, what did you discover?

To your success,

An Unlikely Cure for Procrastination

An Unlikely Cure for Procrastination

Our lives are full, let’s face it. We‘ve picked up a few habits along the way, good and bad.  We have goals. We’ve made connections, plans and we are moving along.

But things could be better.

Something is stopping our progress; over time, projects and dreams can end up on the shelf.

Often, the problem is allowing oneself to procrastinate.

My experience through feng shui has taught me that many of our distractions can be traced back to the disorder in our homes.

Clutter has many effects: emotional, mental and physical.  A build-up of clutter in your home can affect your office and your work.  It can be the root of your frustration and procrastination. It can also represent a ‘stuck reality’.

Clearing clutter can help you break through procrastination and move forwards.

It is all about the energy. Clear the clutter and you free the energy!

A house is an extension of your life,

and that includes your business life too!

If there is an area of your home that has been neglected, it is time to go in and have a peek. You will need to apply a bit of discipline, and you may need to get ruthless.

  1. Does your attic harbour the past?

It is great to display certificates, awards and achievements, but when they are decades old, it will be hard to find motivation through these items.

Much of this type of memorabilia ends up in the attic; high-and-dry is the best place for these items, but this type of clutter can keep you stuck in the past. The items that are stored overhead and out-of-reach are most likely high-school yearbooks, past trophies and collections or items inherited from others.

CURES: Take the time to evaluate the clutter from yester-years. Copy and store items that you want to remember, and pass along the rest. When you’ve sorted through these items, take a step into the present.

In your office, bring in updated items that show recent achievements and endorsements. Display up-to-date personal photos and images, with a goal of moving forwards.

  2. Are you a person that starts projects and then relegates them to the basement?

Creativity can get interrupted, but when projects get set aside for too long, they end up below-grade.

Many basements, lacking light and energy are a logical place to harbour these unfinished projects. The mental angst connected to these projects (collecting dust bunnies and taking up space) can be traumatic. Time to deal with them once-and-for-all!

CURE: Get down there and have a look. The ones you can finish, organize their completion within a reasonable amount of time. As for the far-fetched inventions, perhaps it is time to admit defeat. Cut your losses, clean up the mess and move forward.

  3. Is your garage an expensive storage unit?

The garage is a place where people store much more than their cars; it tends to collect a plethora of sports equipment, tools and seasonal items.

Many of these items cost big-money and if they are seldom used, the guilt of seeing boxes and heaps-of-plenty can be a reminder of the cost.

This type of clutter is not motivating and rather mournful of a bad decision. With guilt, you will not be able to reach your full potential, with anything.

CURE: Would you consider selling a few things? Or, donate to a good cause? Have another look into your storage area to assess the emotional, mental and physical restrictions these items are having on you.

Make room for new hobbies and interests to enter your life in the present.

  4. Are you a little depressed?

A woman’s closet is full of self-esteem issues. Often cramped with miss- matched outfits and multiple sizes, it is no wonder that this is an emotional issue every morning.

Trying to figure out what to wear to the office can be depressing.

CURE: Clear out your wardrobe. Go through your belts, shoes, and dresser drawers; and especially your jewelry. Examine those emotions. Only keep the items that will support you, and help you to move forward.

Hanging onto clutter may represent a reluctance to ‘move on’, or even a way to escape from the present.  Have a look around your space with fresh eyes.

The places you DON’T want to look at are probably the first place you SHOULD start.

Dealing with clutter issues in your home will unfold into other areas; you’ll be able to address the procrastination and stuck areas of your life.

Many people begin to clear an area with guilt and remorse, and then, report a positive uplift when completed. The unloading of emotional baggage comes with the action of taking charge.

The challenge is getting started!

This fresh New Year, 2016, is a great time to ruffle the procrastination-dust-bunnies and recognize what is cluttering your home, and your life. Let’s move forward together!

All the best for a Fabulous New Year!

~Kathryn

Marketing eTip: Why Inbound Marketing is Different from Old School Marketing

Marketing eTip: Why Inbound Marketing is Different from Old School Marketing

Today’s eTip is about inbound marketing and why you need to incorporate it into your business plan and why it’s so different from old school marketing.

Inbound marketing is a fairly new term and one that many entrepreneurs and business owners are unfamiliar with.

The old school way of doing marketing was called “push” marketing where the goal was to send out an advertising message to the masses, such as in TV ads, radio or newspaper and rely on those marketing messages to make sales from.

Since the rise of Social Media, things have changed dramatically where now we want to focus on “pull” marketing or “inbound” marketing.

Old school marketing no longer works; Inbound Marketing is now needed for business successClick To Tweet

Here our goal is to create and publish content so that it positions us as knowledgeable in our field and pulls prospects back to our website to find out more about our products and services.

Essentially inbound marketing is a means to draw potential customers in through interesting and valuable content and the sale will follow from there.

I’d love to hear what you think – do you do any form of inbound marketing for your business? Share your response below in the comments section or if you have a question, I’d be happy to answer.

Why Building a Successful Business Relies on Consistent Marketing

Why Building a Successful Business Relies on Consistent Marketing

Keys to Consistency: How to get into a marketing rhythm to boost your business income

Let me ask you a question.  How many of you NEVER missed a day sending your newsletter, posting daily social media, or publishing a blog post?

That’s what I thought… Guilty!

What’s funny is that deep down we know the importance of marketing our business consistently, but SO many entrepreneurs and business owners are an epic fail at delivering on that promise.

What keeps us from marketing consistently?

Why is inconsistent marketing so hurtful to our reputation?

How can we put a plan in place to make consistent marketing easy?

This article will provide answers to each of these questions and help you get on track with better consistency for your business marketing.

What’s Not Getting Done in Your Business – A Self Assessment

How many of these inbound marketing tasks are not being consistently done in your business?

Or these other valuable marketing efforts that will build your brand recognition and boost your business?

If there are items you are not getting done, then you are leaving money on the table.  Why is it we do that to ourselves?

The Big Lies We Tell Ourselves About Why We Don’t Market Consistently

  • I don’t know what to write about. True, staring at a blank computer screen is not inspiring.

One way to avoid this is to create a marketing calendar.  This is one central document that you can use to map out your promotions for the year and ensure your marketing messaging themes align with it.

  • I don’t know what my audience cares about. This is a lame excuse; there are clues all around you.

For one you can survey your list and followers to find out their biggest challenges.

Secondly you could do keyword research to find out the high-searched topics.

Third, see what others in your field are blogging about. What topics caught your attention?

  • I’m too busy. True, it’s easy to be loaded up with client deadlines and appointments. I know this happens to me the most.

There are a couple of ways that even busy business owners can market regularly.  The first is to get a marketing assistant.  If you don’t personally have the time or discipline to get a weekly eZine out for instance, an assistant can post the articles on your blog and preschedule them to go out in your email marketing program.

The same is true for your social media.  You can delegate some of your social media to a reputable resource who can curate content and preschedule it using a tool like Hootsuite.

  • I am a terrible writer. No problem. If writing is not your thing, you can record short audios or videos instead.

You can even record yourself talking out an article and have it transcribed. You can pull your articles from other materials you have written such as your book, workshops, and webinars.

Finally, there are many talented writers that can take your concept and turn it into an article written with your voice.

Why Inconsistency Hurts Our Business So Much

It’s easy to think that if you miss a weekly email newsletter it’s no big deal. But when you publish a weekly newsletter, its making a promise to your readers.

When you miss that connection, it breaks your promise.  Not only does that weaken your relationship with your list, but it can lead to mistrust.

When you communicate consistently with your readers it builds a trusting rapport and connection.  They look forward to seeing your emails rolling into their inbox.  Don’t let them down.

Plus, inconsistency can lead to your readers to forgetting about you.

They move onto the next most exciting ‘guru’ in their inbox who connects regularly with them.  Then when 2 months later when you finally send out a newsletter, they delete it or mark it as SPAM thinking, “Who is this? I didn’t subscribe to this newsletter.”

How to Reform and Become a Consistent Marketer

  • Schedule time for your marketing. Book an ongoing weekly appointment for you to curate your social media, write articles, publish newsletters, create email blasts, and develop freebies for your list.

It could be “My Business Monday”.  Promise yourself to keep that time set aside for marketing your business.

  • Create an idea file. Whenever you come across emails, articles, and quotes that inspire you, save it to a folder in your email or make an Evernote list of “article ideas”. Use this as your source of inspiration when stuck on a topic to write about.
  • Develop an editorial calendar. This acts as a roadmap to keep you on track with topics, messages, and promotions.  This way your marketing messaging is in perfect alignment with your promotional efforts.
  • Get help. If your business is growing fast and you don’t have time to handle all the marketing yourself, congratulations!

Even if you do have time to handle your own marketing, outsourcing it can free up time for you to spend on profit-generating activities.

Plus, someone who specializes in social media, blogging, and copywriting etc. can often produce better results in less time.

Imagine how your business could grow if you were organized and consistent with your marketing.  Make the commitment today to make marketing your business a top priority and watch your business grow!

And if you are looking for help in online marketing, we can help! Contact us today to discuss your needs and how we can help you get consistent with your marketing.

Are you guilty of not being consistent with your marketing efforts? Tell us why in the comments – do any of the above resonate with you or is it something else?
