How To Stop Wasting Time and Money on Business Programs

Time to Get Clear

As entrepreneurs, we constantly try to learn more about business and marketing so we can advance our businesses. However, many people get sidetracked by trainings and programs that send them down the rabbit hole of busy work and end up wasting their precious time, money and energy on knowledge and information that are not aligned with their vision and passion.

In the first couple of years in my business, I spent thousands and thousands of dollars on trainings and programs.

A few out of genuine passion for learning and growth, but many out of FEAR … fear of not knowing enough, fear of missing out (triggered by some scarcity tactic or caught in the comparison trap), fear of not doing the “right” things and therefore being criticized or judged… etc.

I was looking for some “$297 magic bullet” outside of me for clarity. I was thinking if I had a “tried-and-true” blueprint I could numb out with the “doing” – make myself feel good about checking things off the list – and thereby spare myself from the “soul-searching” hard work that ultimately creates the foundation for a fulfilling business.

I was rushing ahead without knowing where I was going.

Finally I put myself on a “program diet.” I dug through my hard drive and found $6,591 worth of training materials I had not been able to deploy meaningfully and successfully – in fact they might have done more harm than good

  • Some of them added a bunch of ideas to the “stuff I know” compartment in my brain but got me frozen in information overload.
  • Some sent me down the path of doing a load of busy work that ultimately, detoured me from my big vision.
  • Some left me with folders full of half-done assignments that added to the confusion and analysis paralysis.
  • Some even drove me into the comparison trap, getting me to wonder what was wrong with me because I didn’t get the results “as advertised.”

I felt like a faceless number being spat out from the other end of the “guru” factory line, regurgitating the same stuff just like everyone else.

Until I stopped, and returned to the core of my business – ME! The clarity about how I want to express who I am – my vision, passion, value and superpowers – through my business.

I am not alone – I have worked with many coaches, consultants and service professionals who have taken those $1,997 or $3,497 programs, sitting on a load of other $297 or $497 trainings, and still struggle.

Don’t get me wrong, most trainings and programs deliver a lot of value, and I am all for constantly acquiring new skills and knowledge. However, based on my experience talking to those who have gone through those programs, I found that a couple of things are often overlooked:

  1. Clarity and Solid Foundation

These folks cannot give me a confident answer to the foundational questions I make sure all my private clients can confidently answer so they have a solid foundation for their businesses.

They don’t have clarity they need to design a business that reflects their passion, vision and superpowers. They haven’t built a rock solid platform so they know how to articulate “what they do and how they do it” in a way that allows them to sell their products and programs confidently.

Often, the pace and wide range of topics covered by these programs make it easy for us to gloss over certain things we are not willing to dig in and look at – the very things that would trigger fears and discomfort in us, yet the breakthrough will take us where we truly want to go.
  2. Where’s the Money?

Many of these folks don’t have a unique offering that reflects the needs of their ideal clients and their passion, expertise and superpowers.

Why? Because they have not dug deep enough in a way that translates what they know and who they ARE into business strategies and marketing communication.

Because they were not guided to do the mindset work so they can step up and claim their superpowers and uniqueness.

Just writing down your passion, vision, or superpowers on paper is not enough. You can journal till you turn blue, but nothing happens if you don’t have something you can sell and have the confidence to sell it!

Moreover, many people get sucked into chasing after the marketing bright shiny objects,  yet forget to think about where the marketing leads to! If the product or service at the end of the “narrative” does not speak to the potential clients, all the time and money put into marketing is for naught.

Plus, like it or not, many training programs (intentionally or not) foster a certain level of conformity, instead of helping participants step up and be unapologetically unique.

Just taking someone’s 1-/3-/6-month program or some webpage templates and plop it into your website may work for a while, but eventually it will flop because it doesn’t reflect your value, passion and superpowers.

Your superpowers are what make YOU special. Claiming it helps you stand out, make competition a non-issue and command a premium pricing.

***

It doesn’t mean we don’t invest in any program or training. It just means we need to find the clarity to help us discern what is right for us, so we can build a solid foundation for a profitable, sustainable and fulfilling business.

This level of Ultra-CLARITY is where your big bucks lie.

Getting to this level of clarity takes time, effort, and courage. Not because you have to slave over a task for hours on end, but because you have to face all parts of you – the good, the bad and the ugly.

You can no longer numb out with busy work. You can no longer hide behind templates, checklist or blueprints.

You cannot buy this Clarity for $297, you have to work it.

Entrepreneurial endeavor does not come in a box. We have to put in the work, dig into ourselves so our business is an expression of our personality, value and vision.

How to Get Rid of OVERWHELM Using the Law of Attraction

Not long ago I saw a discussion thread on Facebook that left me feeling shocked and disheartened. The question was posted to a group of women entrepreneurs asking them what overwhelmed them the most.

There were over a hundred responses, all ranging from not having enough time to do everything, not having enough money, not having enough knowledge to not having enough clients… and on it went.

I shared what I saw with Law of Attraction expert, Dana Smithers and we immediately decided to see how we could help. So we conducted a Google hangout and invited Karen Laskey to join us where we discussed how entrepreneurs can get out of that overwhelm mode and become more clear on what it is they want.

If overwhelming thoughts are happening for you too, then watch our 45 minute conversation that shares some great tips for you to start using right away.

5 Steps to Spring Clean Your Website and Put Life Back Into It

It's time to spring clean website

Spring is here.  Now is the perfect time to review your website, update any outdated information, and give it a fresh, clean look!

Here are some ways to spruce up your website and bring back some life to it!

  1. Freshen up the  website copy (text and images). Refresh especially your home page  in a way that your prospects will find compelling.  Copy is king in the online world so don’t neglect this critical component of your website.

If your copy isn’t well written, it’s not going to elicit much trust from your potential clients or move them into action, so be sure it’s written in a way that achieves your website goals.
  2. Give it an updated look. If your site was created more than 3 years ago, it’s time to bring it up to date. An old and tired looking website is not going to attract your ideal client.

Not only that, but the chances are good that your website is not mobile-friendly or “responsive”.  A mobile-ready website makes it easy to navigate for visitors that are on the go with their phone or tablet.

Plus, websites that are mobile friendly will start getting an extra SEO boost with their results showing above other results in Google.

So if you don’t mobile optimizing your website by April 21, 2015, it could cost you valuable traffic and rankings.

So use this spring energy to make your website look and feel contemporary and appealing to today’s market. The more appealing your site looks to your prospects, the more effective it will be at drawing them in and doing business with you.

  3. Add a blog (or don’t forget about your blog!) A blog is a perfect way to keep your website copy fresh and new. Post an article once a week and not only will your prospects see that you are actively sharing valuable tips with them but the search engines will reward you by boosting your rankings.

Blog articles also provide new content that you can share on your Social Media channels and to your newsletter list.  When you regularly write and share new articles, it showcases your expertise while building rapport and trust with your followers.
  4. Add an eNewsletter (or don’t forget about your eNewsletter or eZine!) eNewsletters are a perfect way to keep in touch with your followers (your subscribers.)  Regular weekly newsletters are best  but if you can’t publish that often, publish a monthly newsletter. Something is better than nothing at all!

This is a critical component to your marketing efforts and you will get results, I promise! It doesn’t have to be elabourate, but it does need to professionally represent your business so be sure to have your newsletter template accurately reflect your brand.

In relationship marketing, you want to write articles that will inspire, inform and educate your followers. So having an eNewsletter is a perfect way to do this and for you to showcase your knowledge and expertise.

Consistent eNewsletters are also a means to stay top of mind with your potential clients. If you only send out an eNewsletter every 3 or 4 months, your readers forget about you.  Then when you finally send your next newsletter, it’s like re-introducing yourself to your list each time, which is very counter-productive to your marketing efforts.
  5. Add Social Media features to your site. If you’re marketing on social media channels, then it’s important you have those buttons and links on your website so you can send people to your accounts to follow you.

Additionally, you will want to add social media sharing features to your site, especially your blog articles, so people can share them to their followers, which gives you even more brand exposure.

Ready, set, go!

If your website needs a Spring Review, eVision Media can help you update your site, give it a fresh look, and create ongoing social media and communications with your followers.  Contact us today to find out more about eMarketing and web design services.

How to Get Rid of Overwhelm Using the Law of Attraction

Overwhelm

Most women entrepreneurs that I know feel overwhelmed at some point in their business. It happens to all of us whether starting up, stuck or starting over. It’s happened to me at different phases of my 12+ year solopreneur career and I have learned how to manage this ‘overwhelm feeling’ using the Law of Attraction.

When we get too overwhelmed sometimes we even think about just quitting and say to our self “What’s the use, I’ll never make this business successful”.  And I say to you “Yes you will you just need to do some things differently.”

To explain how to do things differently let’s start with the ‘Words=Results’ Relationship:

The "Words=Results" relationship

So let’s make the assumption that you are passionate about your business, you love the actual doing of it but sometimes the business part of it just drags you down.

You get overwhelmed with how much there is to do – the daily running of the business, the administration, marketing, deciding on the best prices and packages to offer, social media, taking care of your family, trying to do everything yourself to save money and when all is said and done you are exhausted just thinking about the next day and everything you didn’t get done today!

When you are feeling this overwhelmed your energy is very negative.  Your words and thoughts are fear-based. Those fear-based thoughts and emotions have a lack mindset that is polar opposite to a positive-abundant mindset. For all entrepreneurs the three areas of your life and business that you never seem to have enough are:

TIME  MONEY  ENERGY

Keep Calm and Stay PositiveWhen you think you don’t have enough time, money or energy you start spiraling downwards heading to major overwhelm.  And the job description of the Law of Attraction is to ‘Match Vibrations’. That’s all it does – negative or positive – it matches your vibrations and gives you more of the same.

While I can’t give you more time, money or energy in this article I can SHIFT your thinking from fear-based lack thoughts into more abundant-positive thoughts.

Your first step is to become aware of what you are thinking and also who you are sharing that with.

If you keep telling people about your problems and how busy you are and you are not getting the results you want – at some point they will get tired of hearing that. And the Law of Attraction will continue to bring you more of the same!

While the most important area to work on to’ get rid of overwhelm’ is your mindset, you still need to have clarity around what a profitable business model looks like for you. You need to ask for support where you need it and you need to celebrate every success you have along the way.

Reset VibeFor now, let’s take a look at your mindset that just might be keeping you in overwhelm. When you find yourself thinking or saying a negative thought, quickly do what’s called ‘RESET your VIBRATION’ and ask yourself “So what do I want”.

That will quickly get you a new result because you have changed your words, your thoughts and most importantly how you now feel!

Here are some examples of comments that I hear from women entrepreneurs that I am coaching and also what I see on many social media sites.

If you keep focusing on these negative comments, remember the Law of Attraction will just bring you more of the same!

CHANGE YOUR WORDS > CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS > CHANGE YOUR VIBRATION

To GET A NEW RESULT!

NEGATIVE LACK THOUGHTS

POSITIVE ABUNDANT THOUGHTS

NOT ENOUGH TIME

ALWAYS ENOUGH TIME

I have so much to do – marketing, social media, products, servicing I’ll never get it all done Today I prioritize my work and easily check off my ‘To Do List ‘ one task at a time
Time keeps flying by I can take my time for each task and do the ‘best’ job that I can
I am always juggling my business and my family When I am at work I focus on my work when I am with my family I focus on my family – I set healthy boundaries
I’ve got so many ideas I have no idea where to start or which ones to do first I am finishing up my smaller tasks on such-and-such a day but today I work on what I need to do to attract more business
I have all this administration to do how can I fit in servicing my clients/customers My focus is always first on servicing my clients/customers. I can pick one day of the week or a specific time each week to do admin or contract it out

NOT ENOUGH MONEY

ALWAYS ENOUGH MONEY

I’ve got so many services to offer but I’m not making any money I am in the process of determining where I make the most money in the quickest amount of time.
I can’t afford to hire anybody because I’m not making ends meets as it is I am going to find someone to barter services with until I have more cash flow
Yes I know I need to do a new website but it costs too much – who cares? A professional website is important to my brand. I am going to start budgeting for that and find the right fit for me within my budget.
Everything costs so much and I never seem to get any price breaks on anything I buy for my business. I am open to receiving infinite abundance from Source however it comes to me! I look for savings everywhere I go now and I attract them.

NOT ENOUGH ENERGY

ALWAYS ENOUGH ENERGY

I’m exhausted with all the running around I do. I’m going to take some personal breaks today because I know everything that needs to get done today will get done.
With all this pressure I’m feeling it’s a wonder I can get anything done right Creating my priority list is a big help to not feeling so stressed. Easy does it – one step at a time.
I just made some really stupid mistakes because I was rushing and not thinking straight When I slow down and focus on my work I make better decisions and feel great which gives me more energy
My energy is sapped with all the limiting beliefs I have about whether or not I’ll succeed or fail Other people have succeeded in the same business and so can I. I’m going to acknowledge all my successes to date and keep a gratitude journal to stay positive.

Remember the more you are aware of your words, thoughts and feelings the more you can deliberately attract what you want using the Law of Attraction. By resetting your vibe and focusing on what you want, you feel better and by feeling better you get rid of overwhelm!

You attract to your life whatever you put your attention, energy or focus on whether wanted to unwanted so focus on what you want and watch your business grow!

Entrepreneurs: Here’s Ten Secrets to a Successful Book Launch

10 Secrets to a Successful Book Launch

Ahhh, the excitement of finalizing your book and that all important book launch.  It’s a thrilling time because all your hard work comes together and you get to reveal to the world your expertise on a given topic.

Now is the time to both celebrate and get to work.

Let’s show you ways to have more success with selling your book and that all important book launch.  Doable tips to help you make the most out of all you do.  Let’s go!

First, start thinking about your launch while writing and finalizing your book.

As the author, who knows their target audience better or knows the important key points of the book that would matter most?  When you start jotting down those notes, the result is a more personalized and targeted marketing plan.

Next, start to get everything in place to gear up for your launch.

This includes:  Your marketing plan, your media kit, press releases, pitches to journalists, articles on your topic, web copy and sales landing pages, newsletters, autoresponders series, social media, and so forth.

Remember the first few months after a book is published take more energy to market, but the more prepared you are, the better.

But keep in mind one vital marketing tip as well.  Where many authors fail is they build and get ready for launch day and the upcoming weeks they go gangbusters, then that’s it.  It’s like they disappear from the face of the earth. Whatever you do in your marketing make it consistent and think long-term strategies.

Let’s break down what all you need for a successful launch:

  1. Marketing Plan – We all know the basics to a good marketing plan, so let’s dig right in on specifics to a book launch. In addition to writing down how you plan to market, don’t forget those goals.  Do you want to sell more books or get speaking engagements?

By knowing what you hope to accomplish you focus more in those directions. Also include a realistic budget knowing the first few months might require more as you get everything set up.
  2. Website and/or Sales Page – Your website should clearly point out who you are as the author and well as clear and compelling information about your book, speaking, etc. Think benefits and why you are the expert.

Remember many will be coming here for the first time to learn more about you. The more information you provide, the better experience it can be. Let your personality shine through, but also keep it professional and branded.

Additionally, don’t forget to include other books you have authored, links to all your social media channels, media mentions and testimonials, and above all else, make it easy to purchase your book or contact you to speak.
  3. Book Reviews – Getting book reviews is again one of those things you need to consider well before the launch. Your reviews will go in your media kit, on Amazon, your website, and more. Of course, you can send to friends and family, but don’t stop there.

When someone sees your Amazon reviews and everyone has the same last name as yours, they don’t feel it’s a “real review.”  Also, create a database of professional book reviewers (we use Cision) and send to those who cover your type of book.
  4. Radio shows, TV & Speaking Engagements – Line up numerous events for the week prior and after your launch by sending out pitches well in advance. Outline in the pitch why your book would be a great fit for their audience and also again, why you are the expert to share it.

Don’t forget to include your local media as well.  Just don’t overdue it.  You want to sound fresh and excited and if you have too many scheduled with all the other PR taking place, it can have a negative effect.  You end up exhausted, over-extended, and not get to enjoy your great accomplishments.
  5. Newsletters / Autoresponders – These can be crafted well in advance as well and scheduled to ease the stress of book launch week. Include exciting details about your book launch, but also provide tips from the book or material of value.

Yes it is great to announce you have a book coming out, but even better when you provide examples of what’s in the book. Also, don’t forget that all important “freebie” or IFO for when they sign up to be on your list.  Make it targeted and of real value to your audience.
  6. Joint ventures with others in your industry – Often times they can provide additional targeted giveaways that add to the excitement of your launch. They share with their networks and your book gets more exposure and they get to be part of a newsworthy event.

The key to success here is to make it easy for those who contribute to participate and also keep it consistent.
  7. Media Kit – Media kits vary, but consider adding in the following. Sales Page, Introductory Letter or Pitch, Bio, Press Release, Testimonials, Excerpts, Q&A.   To get the most from your media kit, use all the components in your marketing.

Tailor the pitch or introductory letter so it can be used for multiple purposes such as securing book review, speaking engagements, etc.  Of course, these will need to be fine-tuned, but a lot of the basics remains the same.  Also, the press release should be sent out as well.  Let’s get to that next.
  8. Press releases – These capture the attention of your audience, whether it’s a local reporter, potential reader, etc., and should be sent out regularly and especially with your launch.

In your release include book information, author information, a quote from you, call to action on how to get the book, and complete contact information.  The key to success here is the angle that makes it even more newsworthy.
  9. Book Blog Tour – Jot down places you frequent that would be a good fit for your book as well as blogs you feel would be on topic. Send a pitch and introduce your book.

Offer several options.  They can do a book review, contest, post your articles, etc.  When you give several options it helps as the can choose what fits in best with their blog.
  10. Social media – Announce on all your social media networks about your book launch and also any media you receive.  Develop a social media plan to keep the excitement going week after week.

These are the basics to a successful book launch.  Just remember have some fun.  Don’t get so caught up in the “must do’s” that you forget your accomplishment of writing a book.  Seek help if needed.

Are you thinking of writing a book?

Why Entrepreneurs Shouldn’t Build Their Own Websites

DIY Keyboard

There, I said it.

After reading this article, you’ll understand why…

Back when I was at the Vancouver Film School learning how to build websites, there was no such thing as WordPress or even content management systems for that matter.

If you wanted a website created, you had to know two things: a thorough understanding of HTML (CSS was just starting to emerge at that time) and a solid comprehension of what you were doing on the World Wide Web.

The World Wide Web’s landscape has changed dramatically since then.

Now there are WYSIWYG editors (What You See Is What You Get), DIY (Do It Yourself) website builders and CMS (Content Management) systems like WordPress and Drupal to name a few.

These tools enable you to no longer need to know HTML (I would argue you still do, but it’s CSS now) but even more importantly, you still need to understand the environment you are working within.

And this is where a lot of entrepreneurs get into trouble.

They think that as long as they can build a website, then they should. And if that’s the case, then they certainly don’t see the need to hire someone to do it for them.

But there’s a huge problem with this logic: They Don’t Know What They Don’t Know.

And one of the biggest things that they don’t know if the difference between a “DIY” website and one that is professionally designed and developed to specifically meet their business goals.

Over the years I have seen plenty of these DIY websites and many people have turned to us to tear down their old site that wasn’t doing them any good and create a proper website for them.

Unfortunately for them (and thousands of other entrepreneurs), when they first started, they thought they were saving a lot of money but in the long run, what really happened was:

  1. They wasted a LOT of their own time and energy trying to create a website themselves when being a web developer was not their core competency. In doing so, the time they spent on it meant they were NOT spending on building their own business and getting more sales and clients.
  2. They lost a lot of money because their web presence did not appeal to their ideal client and even caused confusion as to what was being offered and if those offerings met their needs. Those prospects went looking elsewhere, losing valuable sales for the business.
  3. They didn’t get any SEO traction because Google (and other search engines) does not favour DIY websites or sites that are built poorly. Therefore, their website was very low in the search engine rankings and rarely, if ever, found by people looking for their type of product of service. Again their competitors got the business instead of them.
  4. They lost valuable business credibility. If you don’t think website first impressions are important, think again. If a potential customer, partner, and even employee visits a cheap-looking, amateurish, poorly built website, then the odds are excellent that they are going to have the same impression about you and your business. How your website is designed is critical to your business success.

And by the way, this applies for those money savers by having their VA or next-door neighbour’s son build their site for them. I reiterate my statements above – there’s a big difference between someone who knows how to push a button and install a WordPress theme and someone who can properly design and develop a professional website.

In order to avoid making these very expensive mistakes, you need to have a breadth of understanding of the website environment in many different areas.

These areas include:

  • Branding and Design
  • User Interface Design
  • Marketing Principles
  • Online Copywriting
  • Search Engine Optimization

So the next time you feel it’s more cost effective to put up your own website or hire someone based on the lowest price (which usually means all you’re going to get is a pre-done WordPress theme that is extremely hard to customize), think about how much you are losing in the long run if you go this route.

And if you’ve been managing your website by yourself until now, it’s hard to know everything about running a business, especially when it comes to your website. It may be time to have a team who can help you create a unique online presence that sets you apart and gives you the flexibility to customize it to meet your unique business needs.
